A short article to clear up some things about different bedding.
Ceder & Pine
Even if you are ever so tempted to buy either of them because they are super cheap, its not worth it. Phenol's is the bad stuff in ceder. Its a toxic chemical that can keep away moths, as well as possibly hamsters lives. Phenols can irritate nasal passages and eyes and can lead to bacteria issues due to weakness. The kidneys and liver can be hurt too, because of weak immune system.
One theory claims it could cause splintering with the hamster.
Liver issues is not a thing that you want to have with your hamster.
scented Bedding
Sent bedding come in sents of Lavender, Fruit, and even Tutti Frutti! These are bad for hamsters.
It will make respiratory infections, stress, and other illnesses. Stress comes from over powering smells, and stress can lower immune systems.
Bamboo/Cotton nesting
So, yes. This may sound comfy and snug for your hamster, but not really. The reason this material is bad is because it is long stranded. When you pull apart a cotton ball, you will see it takes a slight bit of strength, and its very stringing. Its basically what this material is made of. Because their hands are so small, it can get wrapped around their limbs, and cause them to literally chew their hand off. Some hamsters will think hey, my hand hurts, so if i chew it off, will it stop hurting? Thats what they kinda do some times. Its also harder for them to ingest it, so they can get sick, or get it wrapped around their teeth.
Corn based nesting
So, pretty short answer, your hamster may want to eat it, and thats not good. Its not toxic, its just kinda like over feeding the hamster.
Good stuff!
Here is the good stuff!
1. Kaytee clean and cozy
2. Aspen bedding
3. Paper based colored bedding
... Ran out of ideas.
Please correct me on anything. Have a good weekend!
P.S: If any of your bedding was on the bad list, don't feel bad. Your maybe didn't know!
