I've had a bit of a scare with one of my hamsters and it prompted me to do some research on vets in my area. I thought I would share this for anyone around me. (Also, MissPxy contributed to this as well) I had a tough time finding a vet around me that actually have experience with hamsters or even take hamsters as clients. FYI, hamsters are considered "exotic" pets, not small animal, so not all vets who are "small animal" vets take hamsters. I probably called over 20 clinics, some of them said they would take hamsters but I didn't feel confident that they had the enough experience to put them on the list or were gouging people for every little service. (Would not recommend Bansfield)

Massachusetts

Primary Care

The Odd Pet Vet (they have the cheapest pricing for exams that I have seen so far, they seem like they take pretty much everything exotic but no cats or dogs) in South Weymouth

https://www.newildlife.org/2015/01/teddy-bear-hamster/

VCA Hospital in Westboro

https://vcahospitals.com/westboro/services/zoomed-animal-care

BackBay Veterinary Clinic in Boston

https://backbayvet.com/exotic-pets/

The Family Pet (Small Mammals: Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, and ferrets) in Ashland

Basic services, no diagnostics, can drain abscess or trim teeth

https://www.thefamilypethospital.com/services/exotics

Worcester Cat Hospital & Bird Clinic (they also take reptiles and small mammals) in Worcester

https://cathospitalandbirdclinic.com/services/#exotics

Emergency Care:

Foster Small Animal Clinic (Tufts - exotics dept) in Grafton

https://vetmed.tufts.edu/foster-hospital-small-animals/

Angell Medical Center (they also have low income services in a couple of locations) Multiple locations, mostly north and south of Boston

https://www.mspca.org/medical-centers/angell-animal-medical-center-boston/

Upstate New York

Emergency Care:

Cornell Small Animal (does care for birds and exotics including reptiles) Submitted by another member: the price for exam is between $180-$200 but the staff seemed very knowledgeable about hamsters. Able to do advanced diagnostics and surgery.

All States

I also didn't find this to be the greatest resource but the vet at the hospital recommended these lists to me

Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (might also be helpful for other states)

https://aemv.site-ym.com/search/custom.asp?id=5188

and this even though it's for birds has a search for exotic mammals

https://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803

Best of Luck,

Best of Luck,

This is so helpful! I actually take all my small pets to the small pet vet, they are amazing and very affordable! And angell is on the pricier side but is amazing in emergencies.

Just a thought-what if member piled together to make an up to date (kind of?) list of vets in every state and possibly other countries? It wouldn’t be completele, but it could be helpful :)

I would definitely add to the list and do some more research in the northeast. If anyone wants to PM me with vets that you guys feel are experienced with hamsters or other small animals. =)

Great idea to have a current list of HH-member-approved vets… we can change the topic title once there are vets representing other states.

I know this is an old post; I hope it's okay to respond since it's pinned. If it's not, let me know and I will delete.

I just wanted to say I have had an excellent experience with Angell in MA (specifically the Waltham location). They are very knowledgable about hamsters, and were very thorough when I went. Right now a visit with their exotic vet will cost $175 just for the visit, plus whatever procedures/medicine you need. As much as the opinion of a stranger on the internet counts, I would highly recommend them if your hammy needs a vet.

I too have used Angell Memorial (and their affiliate adoption service as well!) and been very pleased. They have all the expertise as well as all the technology to give the best chance for your hamster, especially with harder-to-diagnose health issues.
