I'm getting braces in a few days. I have a really bad over-bite and somewhat-crooked teeth (only some are a bit misplaced)

My brother has them and says they hurt like .

do they really hurt that bad?

I've heard it's like someone knocked out all your teeth if you don't take pain killers.

And what chewy/sticky candies can you still eat? I really like caramel/taffy, but i can't have that :gloomy:

Oh, what color should i get?

Clear at the place i go to just looks like a retainer, so i was looking at that, but there's also a ton of colors/colours to choose from lol

My sister got them (still has them), and I asked her. She said that everything she's read and/or heard about them made it seem a lot worse than it actually is. She was sore and it was hard to chew for a few days after initially getting them and after tightenings.

But she says it didn't hurt that bad. And the only painkiller she used was Advil sometimes :)

As for candy and chewy foods, she doesn't really listen to it, honestly. She just eats what she wants. As far as I know, it has a tendency to get stuck in her teeth, but it doesn't really cause issues as far as I know other than the annoyance of having to use dental picks to get it out. Bread especially.

I'm not saying you should do that (tbh, I'm not really sure what could go wrong), I'm just saying my sister doesn't :)

Got braces about a year ago, here's some advice! ;D

Honestly? It hurt a lot less than I thought, but that could've just been my pessimistic mind... yet at the same time, my parents had said we were just going to the dentist to talk about it,,, which we did, but tHEN we got braces so I was really confused hahaha. It really depends though, I just might have some pain tolerance, but don't worry too much about it. I just recommend wearing like vaseline or some lipbalm because mAN were my lips dry after the appointment. As for tightening, hahaha yeah that was pretty painful, but after a year it doesn't really hurt too much and I can eat perfectly fine after a day or two. Basically, painful, but it's not too bad. Pretty sore, and it's so annoying when a bracket is poking your mouth but when you're me, you try to tolerate it and barely put wax on it lmao don't be me.

Okay, technically you can eat chewy and sticky candies but you're not allowed (that never stopped me- still I don't recommend doing that though lol I'm just lucky that a bracket hasn't popped out). I don't know what candies you're actually allowed to eat? Obviously candies that you suck on like jolly ranchers and lollipops but if you really want to listen to the rules, then you'd have to avoid taffy and stuff.
Hmmm, honestly it's your choice. I just go with light pink because I'm too afraid to go with anything else (I did like this greenish-blue and that horrified me for a month) and obviously different people will like different types of colored braces soooo yeah, it's your choice! I don't know if I'd go with yellow or brown in your case though. :)

EDIT; oh! my situation with braces is obviously a lot different considering i needed to remove four teeth for the braces to actually work but you get what i mean haha

EDIT 2; tOTALLY forgot about bands tbh that was the most painful part of braces for me (except for oral surgery) but yeah it gets better and eventually you can actually open your mouth lmaooo

Hello!

I have braces right now, had them for 2 years and it's going great.

It's not that painful. If it hurts, the pain subsides after around 3-4 days.

I had a great experience when I first got braces, it was just a bit uncomfortable, but I was fine after 4 days.

My friend had a very painful experience when he first got them, but after 4 days, he was fine.

Every month, you'll be getting your rubber band and/or wire changed and once again you may experience discomfort or pain for the first few days but you should be good after that.

Avoid chewy/hard candies all together. There will always be those #badkids who are like, "I know my dentist told me not to eat this but i still will". Word of advice, don't be that person. It's not worth it. Your brackets may fall off (mine did once and it was just frustrating and weird and uncomfortable)..

Just listen to your dentist <3

Colors:

Don't get yellow, your teeth may look yellow.

Don't get dark green, it'll look like you have food stuck (light green looks pretty cool though, like a lime color, in my opinion)

I love getting blue, it just always looks great, no matter what shade.

Pink, purple and orange look good in my opinion.

I've seen mixed opinions about red, i think it looks good but a lot of people don't (online).

Silver/gold doesn't really show.

Black suits some people but i think it just makes your mouth/teeth look dark and black.

Don't get white, it sometimes can get stained by food and turn different colors.

That's all I can think of. Good luck!

I had braces for 2.5 years and got them off earlier this year so I hope I can help!

Honestly, they never hurt for me. But that's coming from someone with chronic pain conditions so I have a super high pain tolerance haha but my brother also had them and said they never hurt either.

It may feel weird at first, but other than that nothing else.

Make sure to ask for braces wax, which you can put on wires that stick out and poke you so they don't abraise the inside of your mouth!

I was the "bad kid" as MK called it (lol) and I had gum, caramels, raw carrots, popcorn, corn chips all the like. It never was a problem for me but I don't recommend it because...obvious reasons xD

Make sure to brush your teeth after every meal, and get special floss too because I got gingivitis because the braces got in the way of cleaning and believe me, you do NOT want it. Using mouthwash and an electric toothbrush is what I recommend as well.

Colours~

- I did a light blue once and then it turned greenish so if you choose light colours know that they will change

- don't get yellow because it makes your teeth look yellow

- if your teeth are spaced out, the elastics might be all connected as one so you can't do specific individual colours for that case

- i personanlly went with darker colours to make my teeth look whiter haha, i often had dark blue, purple, teal

Hope this helped!

You've got loads of good advice but here's just my experience. I had braces from age 15-17ish.

They *do* hurt when they get tightened, but only for a day or so. I didn't need painkillers most times but there were a couple of times when I think they were shifting a lot (if you don't know, there are little sort of screws that they use to tighten the wires, or sometimes rubber bands, and they get adjusted every couple of months or so) that really ached and I just took a paracetamol and it was fine.

The inside of my lips were rubbed raw to begin with haha xD Yeah it took a few weeks of sores and using Bonjela (idk what your equivalent of this is, it's basically a sort of numbing gel that tastes of aniseed that you put in your mouth for ulcers or sores). I was playing the French Horn in band at the time and that was difficult to get used to, but again it's something that only took a couple of weeks before it just felt normal.

Colour-wise, at the beginning I was super-self-conscious about them and got the clear bands to try to hide but after a bit I realised that actually nobody cares, so I went with funky colours or themed colours. I had orange and purple for Hallowe'en, then switched to green and red when I got them changed in December, then I did a pale blue and purple... all sorts! Basically just pick whatever you like. You're not going to be able to *hide* your braces, so you might as well em"brace" them  (haha sorry).

Sweets-wise, it's not so much the sugar but the chewiness that can be an issue. You really REALLY don't want to eat something like a toffee that gets stuck and pulls your braces bracket off. You will basically have a loose wire hanging around in your mouth for a few days and a p'ed off dentist. Chewy foods, stuff like spare ribs, just... be sensible and be aware that you have something literally stuck to the front of your teeth. It's like having acrylic nails, you are more sensible/careful about using eg. ringpulls or stuff like that so you don't damage your nails? Same thing.

Final point, please please please take care to clean your teeth, and in between and around the braces. I had a bunch of friends who had braces and didn't clean properly, and when the braces get removed you have permanent staining on your teeth :( Also if food gets trapped in the mechanisms it makes your breath smell really bad. You can get little wire brushes to sort of floss up under the wire and I highly recommend doing this. Good luck :)

I found that it bugged me in band too! xD

I played flute and alto sax at that time and the inside of my mouth bled from the brackets of the braces being against the inside of my mouth so much lol
