I wanted to review some products I’ve bought and used for both my hamster (passed) and my gerbils (current) :)

Those items are:

Small Pet Select unbleached white paper bedding- 178L (bought off Chewy for 40 USD)
Carefresh white paper bedding - 50L (given to me by the person we adopted the gerbils from, so quality may vary)
The rest of these are from Amazon:
Niteangel Wooden Multi Chamber Hide (large)
Niteangel water bottle with stand
Niteangel wheel (medium)
Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay
Caribbean Naturals Sand

Small Pet Select

The SPS bedding was really good quality. It’s a bit off an off white but pee is very visible still. Half of the bag pretty much filled my 75 gallon tank once. I didn’t notice any dust and it did not mess with my allergies. Both my hamster and my gerbils, burrow a ton in it, and it holds it super well. The bag was also very compressed and had a lot inside. It was soft and fluffy, and looked like paper shreds (image comparison below). I’d give it a 8/10 overall, with the downside being that it has a lower absorbency than care fresh (which isn’t a concern unless your gerbils tip over their water a lot).

(image comparison of the two beddings- https://ibb.co/Gt9fVsd Carefreh in the back, SPS in the front) :)

Carefresh

Carefresh was meh. It was more chunks that shreds and had a pellet like feel. It wasn’t as good for burrowing (when they had carefresh alone it fell in a lot), but expanded when it got wet meaning it held all the water from when the water bowl fell over. I don’t think you’d need that much absorbency for most rodents, but it could be good in some cases. When mixed with hay and other beddings it’s pretty good, though, and alright for 19 bucks (according to Petco). I’d personally rate it a 6.75/10, but I know some people love it.

Niteangel Multichamber

It’s really nice! Larger than I expected, but that’s my fault for not measuring. It has room for the wheel, water, and if I chose to put it there, sand. The wood is thick, smooth, and high quality, and it comes with sandpaper in case an edge gets pointy or was missed in manufacturing. It was also packaged amazingly (in a shoe style box that fit it exactly). 9/10 :)

Niteangel Water Bottle

This is also really nice (Niteangels just amazing)! The bottles quite large and the stand is sturdy. You can also adjust the highest, and it does what it’s meant to do (dispense water). 9/10 :)

Niteangel Wheel

The wheel is my favourite of their products-it’s quiet, smooth, has a ton of colors, and can be tightened or adjusted easily. Pumpkin loved it, Eggs and Pluto love it. I only hear the pitter patter of paws when they run on it as well, and it’s easy to clean (just wipe down with warm water or soap and water than rinse) :) (this also gets a 9/10 from meh)

Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay

They sent me a larger bag than I ordered which sucks a little (I’m allergic to hay), but I’ve found that the gerbils enjoy eating it and incorporating it into their nests (Pumpkin ignored it). It smells good, is soft yet crispy, and it’s easy to just dunk a pile in a corner. The only downside is allergies but not everyone has them and it turns out hay has tons of uses! 8/10

Caribbean Naturals White Sand

So. I was originally looking at this on Chewy, but it was sold out when I got the bedding. It looked good on there, but then I found it on Amazon. I was already preparing to make an Amazon order so I got it, but it was sketchy-the picture looked heavily edited, as though the sand was fake. There were no reviews and no description. Chewy had said it was natural with no calcium, so I bought it and figured the package would say. I received a unlabeled, partially open bag with dust and black pieces I couldn’t identify. Me and my dog were sneezing when I opened it. I had to send it back-Reptisand has been hard to get recently and I’ve heard so-so things about child’s play sand, but definitely avoid this sand unless you can send it back. This gets a :(/10

This is great! Wish I had seen this when I was first getting my hamster but I still have lots of the things you have on your list! I was just wondering, is child play sand safe? I have it for my hamster and if I should take it out I will. My hamster likes to sleep in his sandbox (He puts bedding and such inside of it, it really drives me crazy sometimes!) I had Reptisand but, since I use the Niteangel sand bath, one bag lasted me 1 cage clean. I have now washed play sand from Home Depot. It doesn't seem to be harmful and he still uses it? I'm not sure...

I think it depends on when you bought it, the newer bags seem very dusty and also, when reading the bag, I realized, it's not real sand... It may because of the shortages we are experiencing, that they are having trouble getting real sand or maybe they changed the sand because it's cheaper.
