I have a female Syrian who is a massive escape artist. No matter how much space she has (2100square inches here) and enrichment, her favourite activity is finding a way out. Think Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption, but chewing his way out instead.

I need to make sure she can't chew her way out. Is plexiglass the best option? I wouldn't put it past her to chew the sealant between the sheets, so how can I ensure her enclosure survives?

And roughly how expensive would the plexiglass be? It's 2100 square inches so it'd have to be pretty sizeable sheets...

Thanks.

You'd need to look up who sells it in your area, for my 1115 sq in cage (120x60cm) I found a good sheet for 22 euros (18 pounds?). It also depends on how thick the glass is, if its thinner its cheaper.

I agree, plexiglass or some sort of tiling would be best. Price will really vary on your locations ne I don’t know of any places outside the US, unfortunately :)

Is plexiglass strong enough to withstand a syrian biting it? I feel like it'd be extremely difficult to have it cut perfectly enough so that there's nowhere for the hamster to bite on. Her main hobby is escaping and she'd be chewing wherever she can get her teeth on.

Well, the only completely chew-proof option is glass, but for such a large enclosure that might get expensive. One option might be to put 1/4 inch wire mesh all around the enclosure

You might also consider constructing a "fence" around the cage in case she does get out - for example, you could tape some hard plastic sheets together.
