[My First Hams Norman]

My dwarf hamster "Bell" gave birth last night. I'm very freaked out because I didn't know she was pregnant. This morning, I noticed that she's sleeping far away from her babies. And she just walks by them. Is she abandoning her babies or is she just physically exhausted from giving birth?

Hamster mom should be exhausted. But make sure to keep an eye on her so that she doesn't eat her babies! If she does, please move her to another cage. In this earliest days of baby hamsters' life, they will get all the nutrition they need from mother's milk. So make sure you give mother hamster plenty of food and water, and also provide extra protein such as a little milk or a bit of cooked egg. Also, very important, do not handle the babies, if you did, the mother would more likely eat the babies due to the strange scent on the babies. I disagree with the first point-if the mother begins to cull the pups, while it’s sad, it because she knows she can’t care for them (either because there are too many or they’re too weak). Removing her stresses her and the pups out, and its hard to hand rear young pups so even then they may still pass. I also don’t know of any info about a persons scent on the pups making the mother stressed/more likely to fill them

She’s likely just exhausted. Do keep an eye on her though, just in case something goes wrong
