Hello, long time no see

So I’m getting braces in a couple days and I don’t really know what to expect besides that my teeth will hurt for a few days after getting them on. I’m wondering if anyone who has/had braces has any tips to survive the next year and a half? By the way, if it makes any difference I currently have an expander in my mouth that I’ll be wearing for another 6 months, however my jaw is done expanding as I’ve already had it for about 2 months.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies with tips :)

Before you get braces, please put lip balm or vaseline on your lips, I didn't and my lips were literally dead after I got them on.

Your mouth will be very sore after getting tightened every month, you'll have to get used to them, I'm sorry.

Sometimes your braces will poke out and be really annoying, just put some wax on it.. unless you're like me who hates the pain but also doesn't want to put them on.

I've gotten so used to braces I can't think of any advice because it's just been my life for like a year already. :rotfl:

Definitely try not to eat rough foods after tightening, especially tightening for the first few months. I've gotten used to it but your mouth will still be sore lol. :)

If you'd like me to go in depth with anything, let me know! I've had a pretty basic braces experience (other than having to get four teeth removed due to the braces not working if it was there) so you can ask me anything. :goodvibes: :heartbeat:

Gasp hi

I had an expander in my mouth for about a year or so maybe? Not honestly sure, then I got it off and got braces. But my braces were pre-braces if you will?? Basically they were prepping me for more braces... which I know have ;o

I've been having orthodontist work for 4 years now?? I think, and braces for about 3? Not honestly sure lol. And I'm not getting them off anytime soon so I gotcha *fingerguns*

Like Lilums said, LIP BALM
You will need it. (most likely)

I need it everytime I go ;sob my lips get way too chapped and bleeding  :valentine:

Sorry if I repeat anything else Lilums says btw, I'm just saying what comes to mind. But if you get it twice you know it's important eh ;o

Obviously everyone's experiences with braces are different but I'll just be going with what I've experienced or have really seen my siblings (who all have braces except the youngest) experience.

I don't remember exactly how it felt getting them on. Like the actual getting them on was fine, but I don't remember how much it hurt after? And to be clear I also have a high pain tolerance (especially compared to my siblings ;cough) but yeah don't know if that will help my explanations any. But anyways what I do remember is the first time getting them tightened. And omgosh it hurt so bad after. I have a specific memory of being in English class and I asked to go get some water. And when I got the water fountain the water hit my teeth and I like recoiled back in pain ;sob

Some kid in my class even asked me if I was okay lmbo...

After that I rarely had pain after getting my braces tightened, or at least enough pain to bother or interrupt my life. My older sister (at the time younger didn't have braces) would have to take Tylenol after every tightening but I was just vibing honestly. A few times though my cheeks were almost rubbed raw inside because the side of like the main brackets that go over your molars (not sure how well I'm explaining this) had like this weird sharp thing and it never got fixed idk?? Don't remember when that went away but might have been after I got braces back on after having them taken off for a few months. But other than that I was fine. I never used wax, even if I should have sometimes, cuz I hate it but ye :p

But NOWWW

Ahh it hurts after most tightenings idk what changeddddd

Also I've had rubber bands a few times and those often really hurt once you fist get them. And then hurt once you don't have them :p I had to wear mine 24/7 and change them out after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and before bed iirc, and wear them during eating :) Please don't not wear your rubber bands ;sob you'll regret it.

(except the time I changed mine out rarely, came back in and he was like omgosh I can tell you've been wearing yours, good job. And the other lady came in and was like wow we rarely get people wearing theres 24/7 you did really good. And I'm over here sweating because I didn't change them out often but okay. It was weird man don't follow in my example tho)

Anyways so yeah wear your rubber bands when/if you get any :p

Uhm I don't recommend being me and having to get your braces off to have some teeth grow in and then get your other 4 teeth extracted UwU but yk not something I could help ;cri

Uhm yeah honestly this is just kinda a ramble not sure if anything is useful. Feel free to ask anything lol 3 years of my life under braces and watching 2 of my siblings go through them (and currently still going through them) does kinda give me that extra info sometimes but honestly ain't really anything special I can think of that isn't like common info so oop

Edit: Oh yeah like the others said, don't eat bad stuff smh

I've been tempted before to eat gum but I haven't </333

It's tragic.

But honestly I've eaten popcorn and some sticky candy (while being careful tho q.q I didnt eat the sticky candy with my teeth smhhh but popcorn oops) and haven't had an issue but my younger sister has broken her stuff a few times already. Literally within the first week of getting braces too ;sob it's crazy. So she's had to be taken in before from messed up stuff from what she ate but ye

But yeah just don't eat stuff you ain't supposed too lmbo it'll help a lot fr fr

Edit 2: Someone said toothpicks which reminded me

PROXY BRUSHES
My favorite things. I got some from my ortho when I first got braces, but had to buy my own since ^.^"
But these basically and there's different sizes depending on what you need

Always use them when brushing your teeth~~~

Spoiler

Literally they are my best friends ^^

My advice to you from someone whose had 3 kids with braces. Don't eat the bad stuff on the list of stuff not to eat if you can help it. Especially right when your braces get tightened or added. I can't count how many times my kids snapped their braces and we had to go right back to the ortho the day after a tightening.

Oh and don't get light colored bands... they look terrible lol

Hiii glad to see you back!

In all honesty, I ate gum, jolly ranchers, raw carrot, etc and mine never broke but don’t be the bad kid like me cuz something and might happen lol.

Don’t get yellow- your teeth will look super yellow, also avoid light blue, light green, light pink because they turn colour after eating stuff. Darker colours make your teeth look whiter and are less likely to get stained :)

Like Tater I have a high pain tolerance so it didn’t really hurt much, but when it did I found Tylenol or Advil good for helping. Also it might feel weird going outside in the cold since your braces wire will get cold too haha.

I’ll edit this later if I can think of more things but yea hope this helped!

please please buy wax to put on the ends of the wires, dont be afraid to call the orthodontist to tell them a wire is poking you. I still have scars lol.

BRUSH AND FLOSS. it's so much more annoying with braces but you dont want stained teeth when they're removed and you don't want to prolong the process.

if you're told to wear bands, do it. you want your teeth to move properly.

I've had braces for 4 years. I would buy toothpicks, they will say your life!

I recommend using vaseline or chapstick. Vaseline seems to work better for me. While I was getting them on I could barely feel it.  A few hours after my mouth started to hurt, though.  When you get them tightened your teeth feel... hard.  It's kind of hard to describe, but they feel tight.  Make sure you listen to the list they give you of what you can and cannot eat, too.

In case anyone was wondering, I got my braces on last Thursday. From my own experience they didn’t hurt that much (they hurt enough for me to feel the need for Advil though) but they felt really weird at first. Like, I didn’t even talk for about a day because I couldn’t pronounce a lot of things properly

I wanted to thank everyone for your tips to survive the first couple of days. You all made the experience a lot better considering before getting them, I didn’t really know what to expect. So thank you :)
