my hamster randomly gave birth after adoption. this sounds selfish but i have spent the last 6 hours deep cleaning my room to find her babies because they escaped the metal bars and im so tired and just want to sleep. im guessing she gave birth about a week ago (shes new and i havent been handling her except for daily water changes and food changes because it really stresses her out. she is very very shy. i am not neglecting her)

 

is she okay? how can i make sure shes not in pain? i inspected her belly and she seemed fine. are there any personality changes after a hamster gives birth?

 

honestly this sounds dumb but this was lowkey traumatizing seeing 12 random baby hamsters in my room scattered around . they look older than they are which very much confused me; they shouldnt be furry at this point and i only got her very recently

How long have you had her? She may have had the babies earlier (some mums keep the pinkies well hidden). It's good that you haven't been handling her. It's best to leave mum and babies alone as much as possible (except providing food and water of course).

ive had her for around 3 weeks. ive been spot cleaning each week and ive not seen them. they look older than babies, they have fur. i dont know what to do about the escaping situation because if they escaped once they can escape again. its crazy how small baby syrians are haha they looked like robos

Put them in a bin with high enough sides they can't escape. Don't worry about the lid right now, mom will stay with them. That way you can sleep.

OMG! This seems so scary to have a litter of hamsters around your room. I would be so freaked out and my room would be a mess with me looking for them. Hopefully you found them all and they are all safe and healthy. I would get a bin cage and maybe get someone to go and get it while you can keep an eye on the babies to meke sure they don't escape again. Hope all goes well!

update: took them to the vet (found 7, im 100% sure there are no more) and my research said they are old enough to be separated from mama. they likely stayed in Dumpling's cage extremely well hidden for a while and they were probably only escaped for a day or 2. i spot cleaned her cage weekly and im so surprised i didnt find any lol. i made 2 bin cages to separate male from female, gave the cages enough bedding and enrichment, then i found a reliable shelter run from someones home and donated them. i will make sure i routinely donate supplies; i know it must be difficult to have a whole litter. 

 

the one i kept is currently living in a bin cage. i kept him because he was the only one still in the cage with her haha. i felt like i should keep him as a way to say thanks for not escaping. he "belongs" to my little sister and she named him Raya from "The Last Dragon" movie xD shes pretending hes a girl. ofc  i will be the one taking care of him but my sister is 4 and loves to copy what i do so i thought shed like to be the one to name him and own him.

 

Dumpling has hissed at me, tried to bite me, and sprinted away from me any time i open the cage. she does not trust me at all, even more than before. its not because of her living conditions either; she is living very well in a large cage with lots of enrichment and a large wheel. i have never abused her obviously. im not sure what to do about that

I'm glad you found them and were able to find a place to care for them. That's really cute that your sister wants to copy you and you should do everything you can to teach her kindness with animals and how to take care of them properly. She'll thank you for it later. *HUGS*

 

Dumpling may be having some pregnancy hormone issues, just give her some cooling down time and then you can start trying to tame her again.
