Hey guys. I just rescued 5 baby hamsters from an appalling pet shop (am I feeding the business? yes. But if I can save 5 lives, then I will. We called the authorities but doubt that they will act in time to save these young guys. There were older hamsters though, but we only have so much space).

Supposedly, they're about a month old. Eyes are open, very energetic, interested in food. What do I do? Do they need formula? Even supplementary? Do I separate the genders yet?

Yes, you should separate if they are a month old, they could accidentally breed or starting fighting. They shouldn't need formula if they are eating regular hamster food.

Is there a rescue or shelter nearby that can help you find a foster home or take them in?

Provide them with extra protein, since they are growing. If they are already four weeks, go ahead and separate the genders.

There are rescue groups but they're all full.

Will benebac gel work?

Also, I think some are a bit older than the others (different litters) but after checking, I can't tell their gender. Nothing is standing out. Might be still too young. I wouldn't rely on the pet store's estimate on one month.

Would it be necessary to take them to a vet for a health check? And to help check the gender haha.

Benebac is probiotics, not protein. For protein, you can use dried or cooked chicken, mealworms, boiled egg, etc.

Dwarf hamsters are very fuzzy, so it can be hard to see the parts. The holes will be closer together on a female. Males will have a somewhat angular-looking backside, but their penis probably won't be visible. It may help to put the hamster in a clear container and look from underneath.

They don't necessarily need to go to the vet, but if you find it reassuring, then you can do so.
