Pedrita is my hammy… she’s 1 y and 8m old. She takes on a lot of water daily. She’s done so since little and the bigger she got, the more she takes. Now note that I say “take”, meaning that she doesn’t drink it! She puts in her pouch as if her life depended on it… then along the way to her food bowl, her toilet.. she loses the water… often when she wants to come out after drinking she gives me a little of her water too… it’s just how she is… I’ve taken her to vets, 2 different ones so far and I’m sticking to the second one now - as he did great on trimming her nails and collecting pee samples… she is healthy, eats well and is super happy running around the house when she’s awake… she follows me around and often asks me to pick her up (by trying to climb up my leg)… I’m just curious to know if anyone else has a hamster who saves water in their pouches as I couldn’t find much on the www… I’m thinking about getting her to join Waterholic Anonymous, but no point if she will be on her own…

Just as she takes food in. And she wakes up to get water and does so with her eyes still closed (sometimes only one eye open). I can hear the sound of the water in the pouch too when she does a head movement and the water slurps inside. It’s the cutest thing although it requires a lot more regular cleaning of her hut, as sometimes she lets the water in it. I know it’s not pee, by scent and coloration. The vets say each have their personalities and as long as she is not feeling ill, weak nor affecting her appetite and energy levels, she is just fine. I have pictures of her filling up her pouch but not sure if you’re able to see it (it’s just a more swollen pouch).

That's an interesting quirk!
