Doing research on Syrian hamsters and found lots of cage options, I prefer tanks over most, I’m wondering if a 75 gallon tank would be appropriate for a Syrian?

A lot of people say that syrians prefer width. but the width of the tank is 19 inches which I think is good? It’s very similar even a little more to the 40 gallon breeder tank which I already own and is very wide to me!

Any input and suggestions is very helpful!

a 75G can work quite well for a Syrian, especially males, but of the commercial cage options, is probably also one of your best choices under 100 gallons for females as well. The depth they offer for bedding is particularly well suited.

Honestly, I had a female Syrian in a 75 gallon tank. She lived quite happily there. The biggest key is enrichment, having a nice crowded cage (you need alot of bedding and hides and things to fill it up) and sprays and walnuts for her to crack. She was a very happy girl. One my males lives there now and he's very happy too.

I will say that omg, those tanks are so heavy though so you will need a place to put it. I have mine on a children's train table that I put two layers of fatigue mats underneath so that it laid perfectly flat. You will need something that can handle the weight of a filled 75 gallon tank.

I have used a 75 gallon tank for a male dwarf, a male Syrian and currently a female Syrian and it works great given that proper enrichment is provided. It has fantastic depth for bedding.
I will say though, it requires a lot of stuff in order for it to be semi-crowded. I like to use sections of wide cardboard tubes and cardboard boxes to fill up the space without spending hundreds of dollars haha.

Thank you!! I bought it today and it’s so big! (And heavy omgggg) but I’m so excited to start planning the layout. I’m trying to figure out what can sit on it cause it’s so heavy and buying some more enrichment and spray essentials!
