There is such a thing as galvanized chicken wire is usually hexagonal in shape, depending on the width it could be fine to use.
There is also galvanized hardware cloth with is usually square shaped holes, people typically using 1/4 or 1/2 inch.

However, hardcloth is fine in 1/4 or 1/2 because it's squared.

what do you mean my double layer it? like overlay it so the gaps are smaller?You could use it if you double layered it but by itself, I think it's too wide.
However, hardcloth is fine in 1/4 or 1/2 because it's squared.

Yes, that is correct but if you haven't already bought the wire yet, or haven't yet opened it, I would just go with the hardware cloth. It's just easier.
