Hey everyone I’m probably worried about nothing but here is what happened. For about a week my hamster has been comfortable with jumping on my hand to take treats, so I decided to try to lift him off the ground when he jumps on my hand to get him used to the sensation of being picked up. This morning when he was awake I did just that and he jumped off my hand and landed in his sand. He landed on his feet and after he ate/pouched some oats that I gave him but I am worried about things like tumors. I saw a post that said some hamsters can get tumors as a result of falling. Should I be worried about tumors or does it seem like he is okay? Thank you in advance.

The sand provides some cushion. How far did he fall?

About 6-8 inches

Then I wouldn't worry about it. You would know if it significantly hurt them. They would be stunned and go limp or be running in circles for long periods of time. A small fall into soft sand isn't that bad. Obviously not good on repeat but as a one time deal, you don't need to worry. Especially since he landed on his feet.

If he fell more than a foot onto a hard surface, you would want to keep an eye out for confusion symptoms or broken limbs but hamsters are hardy.

Thank you that makes me feel much better!

How high does the hamster jumps? Also I’m pretty sure hamsters can’t get tumors from falling,I’m not a vet,I am less than 15 years lol,but I’m pretty sure hamsters can’t get tumors by falling

Edit:it was just 20 cm or 8 inches, there is no way a hamster would be harmed from that fall including he landed on its feet

Quick side note, I just saw that the reply saying that a hamster can get a tumor from falling is from 2011 and no other sources say anything about hamsters getting tumors from falling.

To be clear, I never said hamsters get tumors from falls, though they could certainly get brain swelling if they had a long fall on a hard surface.

But either way a 6-8 inch fall on their feet, it not usually something to worry about unless the hamster is very elderly or they landed awkwardly such as on their side or back.

I know that you never said that, it was someone from 2011. Thank you for your help!
