Thanks for all the information! I would like to have a glass front, but 180x60 will be to big to fit in my room unfortunately. I prefer just placing it on its back.
If I buy it, how do i know what kind of silicone is safe?
Im not sure if I trust that the cardboard won't be destroyed though. Is it very thin? Would you have done that with your hamster?
Sorry for having so many questions
No, please ask away!
Any aquarium silicone is safe. I used this one, and one one bottle was plenty: (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aqua-Mate-Sealant-manufacture-Transparent/dp/B0046QFTKU/ref=asc_df_B0046QFTKU/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=214529255954&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11942151360067869271&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007031&hvtargid=pla-422334778031&psc=1&th=1&psc=1)
Hmm.. if memory serves correctly it was probably around 0.5cm thick. It wasn’t a cardboard but more like a thin piece of mdf. It bent when you picked it up but it wasn’t that flimsy at all.
I would’ve gone for it. I’m thinking, if the thinnest part is touching the floor and weighed down with a filled cage, the hamster wouldn’t be able to chew out of the bottom as it would be met with hard solid ground. Only issue would be spilled bedding if a hole was made. Don’t forget the surface is flat so they will struggle to get their teeth into it. The only other option for the hamster to chew is the sides and they are made from the thick sturdy pieces of wood. So if your hamster is to chew out it won’t be because of the thin base. Maybe look on youtube to see people assembling the actual unit and making use of the thin piece to gauge how sturdy it is and form an opinion from there?
