There are different types of mites. Some they get from others or items (like other pets, bad bedding or toys), and some they get when their immune system goes down. Hamsters (and most animals) have a Type of mite (demodox mites)living on their skin, which is normal, but if the immune system goes down it can’t regulate them and they get way too many.

Often it can happen when a health condition starts developing. For example, if a female hamster starts developing a tumor in her uterus (fairly common unfortunately), the immune system will "shift" its focus to that tumor. That means the focus is off keeping the mite population down and that's when you see fur loss and bare patches on the hamster, because the number of mites is out of control.

so you could look at this type of mite as an early warning system of a developing health issue with your hamster.
