Here is information about my hamster -
Age: about 2 years
Gender: Male
Species: Dwarf

These are the details of my hamster's ailment -
When did it start: There is no hiding in the fact that the hamster is getting pretty old, and is now sleeping more frequent, turning much slower, the eyesight and spatial awareness is also getting worse.

And this morning I noticed a huge lump on his side, but it is hard to tell if it is an abcess, an cancerous or benign tumor, or maybe something completely different.

What do you guys think?
Should I go see the vet first thing tomorrow?

If you touch and it looks painful to him, possibly reddish, it may be an abscess/infection.

If it feels soft and squishy but he isn't in pain, its probably a cyst.

If it feels hard and doesn't move easily, it feels like solid tissue and moves as one unit, it's probably a tumor.

Do any of these fit?

If you can find an experienced rodent vet, if its a cyst/abscess they may be able to drain it/clean it.

If it's a tumor they may be able to do surgery to remove it, if it's not too large. Yes, anesthesia is a risk to a hammy but if the vet knows what they are doing and the hamster is still active and eating it's not as risky.

It looks like a tumor to me but it's hard to tell from a picture alone. The bigger they get, the harder they are to remove but not every vet is comfortable/capable of removing them. I would maybe make some calls and see how the vets respond when you tell them he has a possible tumor, if you are able.

Also, since this site is closing down, if you want to keep us posting on hamsterclubhouse.com, there's a section for health topics too.

Absolutely, if they can't help him at least ask for some pain killer so if you notice he's in pain later you can give him some to make him comfortable.
