Can someone please clarify how to use the ice pack method? It says to put it inside a plastic bag to collect the condensation.... Do you then place it inside the cage? Wouldn't the hamster chew on the plastic bag?
I tried placing an ice pack on the outside of the cage. After 10 minutes, you could really feel the coldnes seeping through the plastic which was great, but it was also slightly damp which isn't so great. I've also tried putting a ceramic mug in the freezer for a while, but again it starts to get damp after a few minutes in the cage. Maybe the marble slab is the best option.

This really helped, thank you so much. My hamster is still recovering from his 'winter' state. I'll try to make my room much warmer, and I was so worried I was about to return him back to the store, so thank you! 😊

I live in Michigan so I understand the cold issue. As long as you keep the hamster in a warmish area in the house with no drafts it should be fine. I try to make sure the tank is by an inside wall (not close to windows or frequently used doors). Don't put the tank/cage too close to a heat vent as even warm drafts aren't really great. I try to keep my house at between 65-68 F, but during that polar vortex thing, it got as low as 60F even with extra  measures taken. All critters slept a bit more than usual, but were fine. If you are worried about it, you can always add extra bedding and some toilet roll to snuggle in.
