I actually used PhotoPlus 6.0 to do my current avatar... It was my first time and I think I made it better than how I thought it would...

You could search for it and they might have a dowloading site for it... But I think it's as close to Photoshop as it can be...

I'm an Animation student and I would suggest ToonBoom. They have a personal learning edition on their site that is free but you can only do certain sizes and such. They even have manuals you can download that show you how to use it. You can use Flash MX or Flash CS3 for animation but a program like ToonBoom is a lot more user friendly than Flash. Flash is worth using though if you figure out how to use it properly. :) Only problem is the price for ToonBoom and Flash. I'm an animation student though so I am forced to buy such things. xD;

Old topic, but it's a sticky, sooo.... here goes ;)

When I animate (see my avatar), I first start with mapping out what's called the "keyframes". These are the frames in which the main point of the action is. Kinda hard to explain, but say you want to animate someone raising their arm... you draw the first frame with the arm limp, then the second frame with it up in the air. Then you fill in what's called the "inbetween" frames in the middle. The more frames you add, the slower the animation will be, so think about timing and plan in advance.

The complicated bit
Let's say you want to do a 2 second animation, and your animating at 12fps (frames per second). You will need 24 frames to make it run fluidly for 2 seconds. Pretend we're going to animate someone raising their arms.

You want the arm to come up to halfway, then slow down for the final 1.5 seconds. So, you animate the arm coming up to the halfway point so it lasts 0.5 seconds, so you will need 6 frames (12x0.5). Then for the rest (the slower part), you will need 18 frames(12x1.5). More frames=longer animation! ^^

It's a little complicated to start out with, I'm still learning myself :P But you'll get the hang of it!
Flash is an amazing program if you can get a hold of it.

I know this is old and this is a very sucky animation:
Posted ImageIt only took me 5 minutes as you see here ^^

Ok so if you have Photoshop open that.

Draw your picture
Now duplicate for as many frames as you want
Edit these with each frame
Go to save for web under file
Check off it is an Animation, Check off GIF, you can't animate JPG, play back the frames and make edits like how long you wait. Dont edit GIF and Animate, you can also check off loop (it repeats the animation) Now save it, upload it too photobucket or something and theres your animation

I might make pictures for this tut

Hello! I really like to draw, so flip books might be a good option! :)
