Hamsters generally reach sexual maturity from 4 weeks old, meaning the male and female hamsters are able to mate and have babies. Therefore, it is important to start sexing baby hamsters and separate them by gender from 4 weeks onwards. Mating between siblings or between offsprings and parents is known as inbreeding and is strongly discouraged.

The following are two pictures to help hamster owners differentiate their hamster's gender:

Visible differences:
  • On the male, there is a significant distance between his male sexual organ and his anus. On the female, the distance between her sexual opening and anus is much shorter.
  • The male usually has a protruding rear due to the location of the testicles.

therefor males have the 'butts' hanging out and the females have a longer tail. I like the photos Dusty, all good details! :)

The testicles seems to be hidden. My robo's one has been quite obvious. It became more prominent when they grew bigger. At first, I thought that's their bum.

the easiest way to tell, esp. with younger hamsters whose spaces between their vents isn't as pronounced yet, is that the male's private part looks like the opening of a little tube... while the female's private part looks more like a pucker.

I had a male syrian and you could tell, but once I went to the pet store and they had a cage of males. The testicles were soooo huge even on the babies! THen I wondered if mine was even a guy! He surely was, but I think the hamsters at the petstore had something wrong with them because they were red and didn't look healthy. Thanks for posting this! :)

Oh wow, those are very clear pictures, Dusty! Thanks a lot. I've found some on other sites, but most are drawn, a few aren't, and none of them had helped me. Now I'm sure that Sandy is female! She looks almost exactly like the one on the right when I flip her over.

Lovely diagrams lol very nice.......I usually just gently push down on thier belly and tell the difference that way.. You will be able to tell boy from girl right away....(more for early checking lol)
