Hey guys, just wondering how often those of you who have a bin cage clean their cages? I spot clean her bin cage every day and just made it last Saturday. I hear its stressful for the animals if you do a full clean every week so just wondering what your experiences have been!

It depends on the size of your bin and the cleanness of the hamster :)

I am planning on buying a Sterilite 90 quart storage bin:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-90-Quart-Storage-Box-White-Case-of-4/44785803#about

Incase you can not see it, sorry I am kind of new to this x

It is a 90 qt storage bin

30.00 x 19.13 x 13.38 Inches

She is a female short haired syrian hamster and I wanted to know if that is a good size for her.

I am planning on adopting her from a local friend which has no experience what so ever about hamsters.

(Poor hamster is living in a pet store critter cage. The parents don't want to waste anymore money on the hamster and are giving her to me.)

Have you seen the bin in person? If so, measure the BASE of the bin. You want a bin that when you multiple by inside base width by the inside base length you get 450 sq inches or more.

If I may, you might look at this bins, as both are a wee bit bigger, and Syrians do best in the biggest cage you can offer.

The best plan is to take a tape measure (and a calculator if you need one) to the store with you, or several stores, and measure the bases of what you find, then pick the biggest, making sure whatever you choose is 450+ :)

The Ikea Samla bin cage is a good bin cage option. Just remember to also buy the lid. I think that the bin you're looking at is under 450 square inches on the bottom.

I'm super excited!!! I can't afford to buy a bigger tank for my hamster so I'm going to be saving up for a few weeks to buy a bin, some new toys for my Syrian, Stormy, and everything I need to make the bin cage. I'm buying the $13 one since that's the one that fits my budget.

Hi! I just recently made my bin cage. I added extra ventilation holes on the side but I made sure they were up top, and the ones closer to the bottom were cleaned out so no chewing could happen. At one point the plastic did crack but I made sure that those specific areas (only 3 small areas towards the top) were secure so that my hamster couldn't chew them. Also, he is a dwarf hamster and I don't plan on adding levels so I'm not sure how he would reach them. I added some duct tape for safety reasons, I'm probably gonna supervise when I first put him in to see if he tries to nibble. I used a 110 qt tub from target!

For Canadians you can get this at Canadian Tire

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/sterilite-clearview-105-l-tote-with-latch-1426026p.html#srp

(105 Liters is equal to 110 US Quarts)

(It's in Canadian dollars so it is in no way more expensive. So it's on sale $21.59 on sale price tag equals $16.79 US, and not on sale it's $26.99 price equals US $20.99.)

I just bought a beautiful long haired Syrian that have named Dusty. And like Princess Flufferbutts(my Dwarf Hamster) I bought a bin cage. As Dusty being bigger than princess, I bought a much bigger wheel(12'in comfort wheel). But it is close to 2inches above the cage. I was going to make his lid a mesh lid, but I was wondering if any of you had this problem or how you would go about the lid to fix this problem. My thought was just make a whole for the tip of the wheel?

Instead of using mesh, can I drill holes on the lid???

Can I put the mesh on the sides? I have cats and I am afraid if they lay on the top it will collapse. The cats most likely wouldn't be able to reach the hamster but just in case.

You can absolutely mesh the sides instead. However, mesh secure with nuts and bolts should be quite capable of withstanding the weight of a cat. :)

ETA- by mesh we mean "hardware cloth". It's sold by fencing and chicken wire. Fine window mesh or plastic mesh is not suitable- hamsters will chew right out as well
