SAFE BEDDING / NESTING MATERIALS

1) If you know of a bedding that isn't listed, please let me know!  (Double check that it's not listed as a "Similar Bedding" to any other type first)

Hey Tax, one of the beddings I've used that isn't on your list is living world fresh n comfy. It's not dusty and made from recycled papers. Also its highly absorbent and decently priced.

Have you added the Fitch bedding? It is safe for hamsters, and it is a lot like Carefresh.

Hey guys, I plan to become a new hamster mom in the fall when I go back to school and working on my research over the summer. My question of the day is regarding dog fur as bedding. I have 2 large fluffy dogs (newfie and pyrenees) who could provide a lot of comfy fluff, but would this be safe or would I be looking at a similar result to cotton products (ie do the little guys like to ingest this and would it still be long enough to be a tangle danger)?

Im not one hundered percent sure but, using dog fur could potentiely scare the hamster because of the smell of another animal. A good bedding I would reccomend is Aspen wood shaving, these are not pine or cedar and they are safe. A nesting material I would reccomend is toilet paper or paper towls. they are soft and are hamster safe. Once again I am not sure of the dog fur but I wouldnt take any chances.

I have a question that goes along with the bedding. I know that some people use just plain soil (with nothing added of course) but what about Eco Earth, the coconut fiber substrate most recommended for reptiles, is that okay to use? I wanted to know because I have a small bag with barely any used after my reptile's passing and didn't want it to go to waste. Please let me know as soon as possible :)  thanks!

Yes :) Eco Earth is safe.

Just got Megazorb (after learning from Erin on Youtube about wood shavings not being good - wow, but never too late to fix things), hope it's okay as it's really whiffy?  As others have said online it's like strong yoghurt or chicken poo.  I thought hamsters disliked strong smells.

She was really hesitant about going back into her cage (never been a problem after cage cleans before) but does seem to be settling down now.

(Also, obligatory boop to n y x :))

I've seen great reviews on Megazorb, on this website and others. The smell probably won't bother your hamster.

I can confirm reports from elsewhere on the internets that the smell seems to go away after an hour or two :)

From personal experience with megazorb the smell did not go away even after 3-4 weeks and in the end I had to replace it because it left the weirdest musky smell in the room and I didn’t like to think how it must’ve smelt to my hammy

It's been great here, the smell went away after a day or so and she seems much happier than with shavings (quite reluctant to come out now, and here I thought she was keen cuz she loved me :p)

As an aside on the shavings thing, I'm a bit saddened that the shops are allowed to sell things that are apparently harmful all while saying "we care" D:

URGENT QUESTION:

I can’t seem to find anything about this type of bedding so I thought I’ll ask here. Any reviews or opinions on Fresh News bedding? We bought that for your Syrian. I wanted to buy kaytee but my mom insisted on fresh news because it seems to be better in dust control. Thank you!

I had megazorb as I wanted to try it out
lasted for nearly a year ( about 10months I'm gonna say )
soft and compacted well
I disliked the smell a lot but my hamster didn't mind
tbh it was slightly dusty
wasn't too expensive ( costed me £15 for like 80Litres ) ( it was a really big bag )

would I buy it again? no.

I've gone on to use biodegradable cat litter for the bottom layer and shredded tissue for the top layer

I think that there's other safe hardwoods such as beach wood chippings. Aspen is a LOT more common though.

I actually stopped using megazorb for this very reason, it also seemed to be very dusty. I had about three bags of it, and the quality definitely seems to vary. I would recommend checking out zooplus when your current bedding eventually runs out. They sell hemp bedding which is very affordable and smells great. It's also very low dust and holds tunnels well.

Edit: Here's a link to the bedding I use: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/hay_and_bedding/hemp_bedding_small_pets/233480

150l (14kg) for just £16.
