While most of us prefer to adopt hamsters, finding an adoptable hamster can be a daunting task in certain locations. So, I’ve compiled a link list of resources to help with the hamster search. This list is for North America, but perhaps we could build lists for other locations in the future.

Hamsters in city/county shelters should be given priority because these shelters often do not have the space or experience to care for small animals and these animals may be at risk for euthanasia. However, be extra patient with hamsters from shelters because they may be very stressed from having been housed around so many cats and dogs.

 

 

Pet Shop Adoptables: Some larger pet shops, such as Petsmart and Petco, may have adoptable hamsters, in addition to their hamsters for sale. Call your local store for information and availability.

 

 

Classifieds (Craigslist, Kijiji, etc.): You may be able to adopt a hamster directly from someone who is trying to rehome their hamster. Be very careful if you go this route; some of the people posting “adoptable” hamsters are actually backyard breeders! Look at the photos and description carefully and use your best judgement. If you are a minor, discuss this option with your parents/guardians and have them handle the messaging and details.

 

For additional safety, meet in a public place (Many cities offer their police station parking lots as a safe zone for meet ups). Bring a responsible adult with you; I don’t care if you are an adult yourself, bring one anyway.

 

 

Small Animal Rescues: Below is a list of rescues that specialize in small animals. The list includes hamster-specific rescues and rescues that focus on rats, guinea pigs, etc. but also take in hamsters. As you can see, there are some gaps in the list; if you know of small animal rescues in these areas, please share.

 

Most of these rescues are very small operations, so they may not have adoptable hamsters available all the time. You may need to check again later.

Some of the search websites at the top allow you to sign up for notifications, so they'll send you an email if there is an adoptable that meets your search criteria.

 

I'm also on the lookout, but I'm not in a rush, since I am doing some organizing for the new year. There are some cute adoptable Syrians in my area, but my accessories are all dwarf-sized. So we wait.
