So I'm sick. I'm sneezing, have a stuffy nose, and a sore throat. I don't have a fever though, and I don't have an upset stomach. I'm 90% sure it's just a common cold. Everyone else in my fam has had it, so yeah. Anyhoo, will Zoey (roborovski) catch it? I've been down twice to her cage today, just spot cleaning and whatnot. Should I stay away from her till I get over it (everyone else's has lasted at least a week though!) or will she be ok? I'm just getting anxious since she's about the age Thunder was when his health went down. The other thing is, I don't WANT to stay away from Zoey (although I will if necessary) because I'm going to Goodwill and Petsmart tomorrow to pick up some things for her, including a large sand bath dish. So yeah, should I keep away from her? Or will she be okay? Can she catch a cold?

aghhhh

I’m also sick, and I don’t think it will do anything but just don’t be handling her :)

Hello! :)

Robos can get covid - most sources I’ve found even label them as “highly susceptible” - so if you haven’t gotten a negative test, I would be cautious. I’m not entirely sure if they can catch human colds or not (though I’m leaning towards no), so I can’t comment on that. :)

Yes, they can have someone else care for the hamster while they are sick.

It's up to you, but the most cautious course of action would be to stay away from her as much as possible, and wash your hands and wear a mask before doing anything in her cage.

Depending on what you have, it's possible she might be able to catch it.

It should be ok to still buy things for her, but wait a few days before putting them in her cage unless it's something you can easily clean. Cold viruses don't tend to live long on surfaces. Covid can live a bit longer on surfaces but 7 days should be sufficient.

They definitely can. Hamsters have been used as models for a lot of research about covid. I know there’s definitely been research conducted with Syrians and robos, but I’m not too sure about the other species. :) If possible, I would recommend having a healthy family member (or even friend) take care your hamster if you have covid. :)

Thanks guys, I dont know what to do now. I went down with a mask and sanitized one of her items earlier.

Like I said I dont believe I have covid, but idk for sure

Now I'm not going to those places tomorrow  :((((

The ppl in my fam who have had this have had a sore throat & stuffy nose for a day or two, then a cough for a few days, then been blowing their nose nonstop for a few days. I've been around the rest of my family and my dog- would she be able to catch it?

Also, it would be okay if I wore a mask to take care of Zoey for the next few days, right? My family and friend can't take care of her since they don't know much about how I do it-

I'd basically be wiping down her wheel each day, fixing any super messy spots, and scatter feeding on Wednesday. Is that ok if i wore a mask?

Thanks :P
