I don't have objections to barred cages about looks, however my concerns are the amount of bedding a barred cage can hold since most bases are 4-6 inches deep. It should be fine for a dwarf (Russian and Robo), but for a Syrian, most likely they will not be happy with the size of most barred cages and bedding depth.

Edit: Spelling

I agree that the bases of most barred cages are too shallow to provide a sufficient amount of bedding, however, they can easily be fixed by attaching cardboard or plexiglass to the sides of the enclosure to allow for deeper bedding :)

I agree that it's possible, but the OP wants a barred cage because of looks and weight. While adding cardboard isn't going to add much weight, it can be very inconvenient and it's easy for the hamster to chew through it, and cardboard doesn't look very nice if the OP is looking for a cage that looks good. Plexigalss is a great option however it's hard to fit on and adds onto weight and can add quite a bit of money. So yes, great thoughts, I have to agree. :)

Good points. Some I have to agree with, others I would like to add to with ideas :)

Cardboard would work nicely in my opinion for a hamster who doesn’t chew a lot and there are many ways in which you can make it look nicer. It doesn’t have to be inconvenient either. By creating a frame and and attaching it securely to the inside of the bars, particularly if there is a nice top opening lid, it can act in much the same way as a proper solid-sided enclosure.

Plexiglass, while it might add a little weight, is actually surprisingly light. As well as in actual fact, for the thickness you would need for covering bars, it is relatively inexpensive. It could be made by measuring the internal dimensions of the enclosure and creating a tank-style frame, aquarium sealing the edges. Then you would be able to just slot it into the enclosure.

Things like this take extra work, but for people who particularly want barred enclosures they are options that might be viable. :)

I agree, but since the OP doesn't have hamster right now, you never know if they are chewer or not until you get them. :)

I agree, I have nothing against barred cages, however I personally feel it's hard to make it suit your hamsters needs. :)

It all comes down to the hamster. Some dwarves won't like one of these cages, but some Syrians will be living in heaven

You could add (unsuitable for the animals that they are meant for in general) guinea pig or rabbit cages, such as the Amazon Basics pet habitat and include that wire mesh would be needed as the bar spacing is too wide. :) These are generally larger than wired cages meant for smaller animals so that's a plus!

You can also add the Alaska hamster cage. I believe it's around the same size as the prevue :)

Oh, thanks for letting me know, they're still available over here which is why I suggested it. :)

Ah, alright! I think they discontinued about a year ago here, I wonder why they stopped producing them?

1/8" thick acrylic sheets would be perfect (and lightweight) for adding to a barred cage! It's what I used at the bottom of my custom rat cage to give them 5" of bedding to dig in.
