a little tw here for some not fun parent stuff including my dad threatening to literally off my pets :)

idk if this is the right spot sorry if I should put it somewhere else

for starters I can not fall asleep without music playing - nothing else works, not melatonin or anything. I use spotify and have a specific playlist that I made that works best.

I don't have money for premium so I just used the regular which of course needs wifi. My parents saw that a device was up late on the wifi so they blocked it about 2 weeks ago.... resulting in me not sleeping well. I'm talking 3 hours is the longest night I've slept in that time

I had a 3 hour work shift yesterday plus a ton of homework, then fell asleep really really late again. woke up late and missed my mom leaving - she drives us to school so she left without me since I overslept. my dad lost his mind over it, he was yelling for literally the entire morning, hours, before I was able to go to school.

I'm throwing away my chance in life, I'm disappointing him, I'm stupid, etc etc etc the normal stuff he likes to say lol. the stuff that doesn't bother me. but today he threw a whole new thing in there, he threatened to dig Artemis and Gatsby out of their cages and throw them out in the snow. it's currently -20C.

so obviously I got upset, he finally found something that got to me so he kept saying it. literally stormed down to my room and started digging through Gatsby's bedding trying to find him. thank god he sleeps deep in a burrow under his sand bath or he would have found him. my mom managed to get him to stop but I'm scared to leave the house in case he decides to go through with it, I honestly would not be surprised if he did.

I'm not going to get any more pets after they pass. I'll do everything I can to make them happy but after that I won't get more until I leave, and trust me I'm not staying in that house a second longer than I need to. two and a half years and I'm gone.

with no pets I don't have to worry about him hurting them (or literally killing them - he specifically talked about them freezing to death in the cold.) he wouldn't have this stupid control over me too. it'd be rough because they really help with my mental health but there's no way I'm taking that risk.

I love having hamsters so much and I'm really going to miss it, but I'll still have them for awhile and then it won't be too long before I move out

all this because I overslept once lol

:(

I'm really sorry you are going through this. No parent should ever threaten a pet's life to "discipline" their child.

I take it your mom doesn't really stand up to him more like placates him? Do you by chance have a relative nearby that you could see every day but they could be housed there?

Ugh, sorry, I agree that's an inappropriate way to punish you for sleeping in and won't help solve the initial problem of not getting enough sleep.

As for the music, could you old school it - gradually purchasing your favorite songs so you can play them offline?

Completely agree, that is such an inappropriate way to discipline someone,  by threatening your pets' lives. .

From your post, it seems like your Mom is the more understanding of the two parents.  Would it be possible to have a talk just with her and explain how you're not able to fall asleep unless you're listening to music, and how drastic of an effect that has on everything?  Maybe she can somehow relay that to your Dad. . .? It seems like she's able to reason with him, so maybe she could relate how the lack of sleep is affecting you. . .

As far as immediate possible solutions, is there any one at the school that would be willing to let you keep your hammies in their classroom. . .? (Since the relatives and friends route isn't panning out)

Adding to this, they could also try downloading podcasts/audiobooks :)

For the music, you could get a recorder and just record it so you don't even have to play it on tecnlogy

I've tried :( she's understanding but she can't convince him, his mindset is basically wait until I'm tired enough to sleep properly

possibly? I'd just be worried about care that they're getting as well as other people poking at them, but it might be less risky for them there

that's my plan - I recently got a part time job so after spending on the hamsters I'll have some left over that I can use for that

thanks guys, it seriously means a lot :] <3

I'm so sorry for you... my dad yells too and constantly threatens to get rid of my pets... but I have a dog and a cat so he can't try to throw them out into the snow. I hope you can keep your hammys safe!
