Hi!

Sooo - I need advice on some stuff in my life.

1. I am thinking about changing schools.

I am in middle school right now and am thinking about switching schools. I am really not thriving and doing my best at school - and my school just isn't a "healthy" place for me. The other school (I am thinking of switching to) is smaller and gives me a fresh start. Admissions for next year close tomorrow and this is a huge decision for me. All of my (small group of) friends are at my current school and I just don't know what to do.

2. How do you know if you should cut your hair short?

My hair is getting kinda long and hard to take care of and I want to cut it short. But I am afraid it will look bad, so I am not sure what to decide. I got my hair cut to above my shoulders a few years back and I looked like a complete child. Anyone know what to do?

Thanks if you leave a response!

-Kat

1. I assume you are talking this over with your parents? I am certainly not saying that you should switch schools, or not, because I don't know if the issues you're having might be something you could overcome. But just in general:

  • I don't think it's a good idea to base decisions about education on where your friends are going.
  • Fresh starts can be overrated.

It's more about deciding what you want for your future, and figuring out which school gives you the best opportunity of getting there.

2. All bad hair decisions can be undone, even if it means having to wait for it to grow back.

I guess it depends on what you are getting a fresh start for. In certain situations, a fresh start can be good.

For example, when I was a kid, I had basically no friends and I didn't know how to make friends, I was miserable lol

We moved to a new neighborhood, which caused me to switch schools and I was able to get a fresh start with a bunch of kids who didn't know me and suddenly, I had a lot of friends. That year of my life was very impactful to me and helped me learn a lot.

However, if the switch would not really effect the issue, like you have bad grades because you don't put in the time to study (you general, not you specific) switching schools probably isn't going to change your study habits.

So ask yourself will switching schools solve the problem or avoid the problem? If you are avoiding a problem, don't, because it will follow you.

As far as your hair, yes it can grow back. You can try new things but is this a good time for it? Do you want a new hair style because of the hair style or because you don't like who you are now? Because changing your physical appearance doesn't really fix any issues going on inside. Ask yourself those questions before you make a decision. Are you doing it for the right reason? Not saying you aren't but as a woman, I've definitely made some questionable choices at times in my life when I was desperate for change. I changed the things that weren't really the problem lol It gives a temporary relief but that's all.

However, you decide, best of luck!

I don't think I can help much with the first issue as I've never been to school (always homeschooled, bro), but maybe I can make a suggestion about haircuts?

I've actually been thinking about cutting my own to about shoulder length. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it, but I like the idea. I doubt I will, though, for convenience's sake (ponytails and stuff).

But if you want to do it, I would say do it. It will grow back, might take a while, but you won't even notice it until one day you're like, "Hey, I have x amount of hair now!"

I wonder, have you tried layers? Like layers with short hair or with long hair?

I went to a small school a few years back and I loved it. It was so much fun and the students there felt like family. If you aren't happy in your school I would suggest trying a new one.

If you didn't like how your hair looked when it was too short nor too long, how about cutting it medium length, perhaps to your shoulders or just below them?

Good luck with everything!
