I know that this (sub?)forum is kind of old, but I'll give it a try and see if anybody responds anyway. So we have a chicken and she lives alone. Many months ago my dad found her at our aunts house, she just walked in the house lol. They caught her and asked around, but nobody claimed her. We took her in and made her at home. Not sure how old she is, but she's a laying hen. Recently she hasn't been laying much but she used to lay eggs about every other day. She lives in a decent sized pen with a cover on top. She has water, food, two places to perch and a hide in which she lays her eggs. We don't want raccoons to get her, so we lock her up in the night in this little house (we put her hide in it and she has enough room to walk around), then let her out in the pen early morning. Sometimes we allow her to free roam the backyard.
Does anybody have any experience with chickens? She seems like a happy chicken by herself but perhaps a few chicks would help her somehow. I know that they are creatures that need company. We have an area in our yard we can fence off and could buy a few extra chicks, but is it a necessity? Is she lonely? She seems to be doing fine, but I'm not an expert on poltury birds. Any tips appreciated.
Edit: Okay, so really I already know the answer to my question (yes, chickens need company to thrive). But I was interested if anybody has had a chicken that lived alone or if somebody had experience with this stuff.
Anyway if nobody replies that's just fine, because really I was looking for testimonies.
