Binky you odn't have to worry about sounding mean, it's fine. Just make sure you are being extra careful when you are pushing him off.

But if your sick, you can pass it on to hamsters, so if you're sick try to avoid holding your hamsters. If you must handle it, then wash your hands thoroughly before&after handling your hamster.

I also agree that positive reinforcement is the only way to go. Why would anyone want to scare these tiny creatures who are already timid and skittish?

Sorry to respond so late, but I just saw this.  If you have a Petco near you, get one of their Hamster Care sheets.  Their tear sheets will normally tell you if there is any kind of warning you should be aware of before purchasing an animal.  I can't remember if there were any precautions or not, but I do know there were some when we got our guinea pigs.  Most animals do carry some kind of warning, even cats or dogs.  Its all about using common sense to avoid problems.  Wash you hands after cleanings, etc.

I couldn't get the hamster care sheet to come up, but here is one general warning that Petco produces:

it doesnt make any difference if they are male or female, they both bite equally. there is a sticky thread here somewhere called taming for the timid. i would look there.
