I love this post but why not put your sources here so those people can just look at the information themselves?
PS- If I could pick anything as a weapon, I would pick that stinging nettle plant. I got stung while hiking and its such a pain!

If I could pick anything as a weapon, I'd pick a flame thrower. That's gotta be more effective surely?
Or did you mean from the list? :P

I wanted to but my post was already so ridiculously long.
And some of my sources aren't formal, I gathered that certain things were safe by reading forums of other languages to see what was commonly viewed as safe and also by emailing people whose job was specifically to make sure products with these ingredients were safe.
Siting that many odd sources would literally double the size of my post and cause confusion while trying to read through it (especially if you're not used to reading research papers which many of our younger members probably aren't).

PS- that stinging nettle is the worst when you're hiking :pullinghair:
I've got some sources that suggest there is something called dead nettle which is not nettle, and thats what hamsters can have. I've got other sources that suggest dead nettle and nettle are the same thing, just different names, and that hamsters can have certain parts of nettle plants. Until I can find something definitive I'm leaving it as a question mark.

My inner-geek just adores the fact I'm not the only one here that knows of the verbosity of research papers.

oh, well i was just reading another post you made about how you don't trust websites that don't site sources, and since most of us probably haven't heard of using many of these things... it's just hard to see it as something i'd want to trust without that information there as well. it would just make your post seem more reliable rather than to say if you want the sources to PM or whatever.

&& stinging nettle just really hurts when you make contact with it!

I do tend to embrace my inner-geek quite often.

But enough of that GO TO BED CHRIS!

@ Jaybee- I see your point and it is valid. But I feel I've done well to save my sources and offer them if anyone is wanting further verification. I do feel that people should be prepared to back up the information they supply, and I never trust something as being true when it is unsited.
The difficult thing in this situation was that I was working with a mix of what is considered common knowledge in other cultures and with what large corporations feel is safe. There is no current formal method available for citing that much collective information. I would literally have to site several forum topics or blog entries of several different people just to prove that it is collectively agreed on that 1 specific plant is safe.
I also scoured the web reading countless lists of plants that are toxic to animals in general, just to make sure that none of these plants where on those lists.
I double-triple-quadruple checked everything because my sources are not by themselves reliable. Collectively they are more trustworthy, but as a stand alone statement, I would never trust them.

so most of this is just hear-say and gathered just from what other people claim to say is safe then? no actual documents to back it up? can't say i want to follow this then :)
and like i said, the fact that you don't want to site all of your sources here for any guests that may come across this and be curious is just a wee bit shady to me. if people are bothered by too many links, they don't have to read it but it would make this post a lot better if you would just put the links here so people could check them out. i dont like the secrecy.

I never claimed to offer scientific proof of anything. You obviously did not read my original post very closely because I did explain how I gathered the information. By reading forums, reading blogs, researching the ingredients found in common hamster products, and emailing companies which produce those products.
Now, I have proved myself to be a reputable hamster keeper in most people's opinions. If I don't have the answer to a question then I generally at least know where to look for it.
You can consider it shady all you want, quite frankly I do not care. I've explained to you twice now why I did not include all of my sources in my original list and if you are too skeptical (or thick-headed) to understand or accept my reasonings then that is on you, not me. I am simply trying to make my post easier to understand for the members who are not used to reading things in such a format. I know not everyone will want to be bothered by further information because not everyone has an interest in keeping live plants for their hamsters. I did invite anyone with an interest to feel free to PM me for my sources.
Besides, its not as if I saw you linking any source of information when you wrote your bin cage tutorial, and I am quite certain that some of your ideas originally belonged to other people.
In any case, if you don't like my post or my methods of gathering information then please feel free to not respond.

I believe Suzyhomemaker states right here that she is willing to share her sources with anyone that wishes to have further verification. There is absolutely no need to start anything here. You don't have to agree, however it is typically recommended that one reads every post (and all of those posts) before they begin to point fingers.

This is a place to share information not start issues. Keep it civil guys.
