It's clearly a conspiracy. Stupid mods.

I pinned it because it is informational. However if someone does post a topic asking about what species their hams are, I do not think a quick post saying "check this topic" with this link attached should be the only answer. We still are going to be helpful in that department. :) Especially since that's most of the action this board gets. Don't deprive him of his visitors. :cheeky: I didn't reply right away because I'm laaaaaaaazy.

i think the most difficult species to identify will be between winter white and campbell especially with so many hybrid around nowadays, only people with lots of experience seeing these two species else most will be kind of 'confused' especially by the agouti color.. :p

There are five domesticated Hamster species and they are:
  • The Syrian Hamster
  • The Campbell's Dwarf
  • The Djungarian Dwarf (Winter White)
  • The Chinese
  • The Roborovski

my hamster book says dunjerians are campbells, not winter whites

Also known as the Siberian hamsters, winter white Russians are often mistaken as the Campbell Russians because they are similar in appearance and may be found in the same regions. Both the Russian Campbells and the winter white russians are originally believed to be one and the same species, or subspecies. In later scientific writings, it is agreed that the two types of hamsters are separate and distinct species.

Take a look here that further explains the differences -> http://www.hamsterhideout.com/breedsww.html

Panda hamsters are just Syrians with black and white coats :) There's no such species as "Panda Hamster" :)

There is no such species as a "teddy bear" hamster either. Those are just the names that petstores come up with so that people will buy them. They're all the same species, a syrian hamster :)

As everyone above me has already stated, the Panda Bear Hamster is just a Black Banded Syrian Hamster :) Syrian Hamsters come in an array of colors and "Panda Bear" was a name made up by the Pet Trade to make the Black Banded Syrian Hamster seem cuter and buyable. "Fancy Bear Hamster" is just another way of saying "odd colored" or "mutated color" in Pet Stores. I am glad you picked such a pretty Hamster and most if not all Syrian Hamsters are docile and friendly! Congrats!

Here is an Album of one of my previous Black Banded Syrian Hamsters, the kind you know as a "Panda Bear".

I just loveeeeee the black & white syrians!! So sweet & adorable & not so easy to find. (at least around here)

I hope I find another to adopt, one that looked like my Hammie. Long haired Syrians are very beautiful & those are my favorite. All hams are gorgeous in their own cute little ways. lovestruck.gif
