Would love to see it! Plus it'll really highlight the "mean" maximum lifespan :)
Have a good dinner! (Post it!)

^ Tax, I'm taking statistics this year and also can put up boxplots, density curves and the like as well. It would actually help me study for my test tomorrow :tongue:

as an aside, my vet who has treated exotics all her very long
career, has told me the same thing has happened to rats...
they used to live to 3-5 years and now she sees them dying
all the time about 1 1/2 years old.

cause of death would be an interesting variable.

Sorry Azayles, due to the x-bar and standard deviation (of this sample), a density curve doesn't make sense. Hamsters can't live under 0 years Posted Image If our standard deviation was smaller, I'd be able to find out the range that 68, 95, and 99.7% of hamsters live in. I could've done a confidence interval to see what the true mu of the population could be, the chance that a hamster would live to be a certain age, etc. etc.

Here's your boxplot though Posted Image

This is INCLUDING malloria's data, bringing the x-bar higher.

Q1= 8
Q2=median=15.6
Q3=24

You can split the x axis into sample bins, starting at zero, then binning data between 0 and 1 months, 1 and 2 months, and so on. That will work, and should give enough data points over fifty samples to form a rudimentary curve :)
Kinda like your second picture, but with a one month bin size against frequency.

Even doing this, it doesn't seem to fit a bell curve much. I mean, maybe a little, but...well, see:

Good work, Tax!
And Oh wow, I'm really surprised by that! I really thought we'd have more of a curve going on. Probably the small sample size has skewed the results somewhat and made it too "bitty". I wonder what a best fit curve would like on that graph?

This is all great work :) I really hope more people submit figures so we can really expand this out. :)

O WOW. I did not know that hamsters only lived that little. When I had hamsters 10 years ago they were all living to 3 or 4 years. I even had one that had a tumor half as big as him that lived for over a year with the tumor (my parents refuse to take any animal besides a dog, cat or horse to the vet. They got REALLY mad at me for taking my rabbits to get spayed even though it did not cost them a penny). This data is really shocking. I like the most recent chart that shows the frequency a lot. I can not believe that you put the time into making these.

Wow. It's terrible how short their lives are! Posted Image My bet would be that their lives has been reduced greatly by mill breeding, which makes me even more passionate about adoping-not-shopping!

It would also be incredibly interesting to see the average age of well-bred hamsters, average age of store bought hamsters, & the average age of rescue hamsters. (Even the average age of UK hamsters vs North American!)

Also, perhaps we could also collect data from other forums to make the results more accurate?

Thought I would add for when you update that my Hedges lived to 3 years 1 month.

UPDATE - The original post has been updated to include more data!

My first dwarf hamster, Blixa, lived until she was 3 years old smiley.gif

I would love to include your data, but I need a bit more information.  What species was Blixa, and what year did she pass away in?  Thank you for your help.  goodvibes.gif

Thank you for your contribution!  hug.gif

These all sound like amazing ideas.  My concern is data.  I would need a lot of data (probably from 300+ hamsters) to make this possible.  mind-blowing.gif

I know you just updated this, but if you update it again Poppy (Syrian) lived to 25 months and Finn (WW) lived to 4 months.
