What a horrible situation!

Do you know those colorful, tiny, pint-sized bags of Carefresh (rectangular!)? Buy one of those for evacuating with.

This is my list:

Tiny Bag of Carefresh

Single Jar of Food

Travel Carrier

Backpack for toting it in.

Thanks for the post! We all hope we never have to make actual use of the tips on here, but it's so much better to be prepared. I do have one carrier, but will have to look for/make/buy another one since the robos are separated now. This also reminded me to make an emergency plan and kits for the humans as well.

These are good tips. Also for in the worse sictuation if your small pets escaped due to fire melting the cage. Your safety comes first (so you should get out first) .(Hopefully this will never happen but if you couldn't save your hamster and say it's escaped. with hamsters being escape artists or like the smoke melted the cage. Is it still worth telling the emergency services if it's possible your hamster may still be running around the house?

If your pet escapes due to fire melting the cage, A. that's a miracle and B. they have a bigger shot at survival than if they'd stayed in the cage.

That said, hamsters being so tiny, they'll succumb to the smoke and the heat fairly quickly in most cases.

It's certainly worth mentioning there's a hamster cage and where to emergency services, but unless it is a very small fire they are unlikely to retrieve it as doing so might put lives at risk. If your hamster has escaped, there is no realistic or safe way for them to even consider trying to get them out.

Huh... Never thought about an evacuation plan, before. I've got 3 guinea pigs and one hamster, but only one carrier....if an emergency were to happen RIGHT NOW I'd probably cram the three pigs into the carrier and then just plop that carrier on top of Bob (the hamster)'s cage and carry his entire bin out with the guinea pigs on top. And my dog on a leash behind me. Them piggies would NOT be happy with that htough... When I get some more spendable money I'll invest in a couple more carriers, haha.

This is always something I've been super paranoid off.. what do you do if you have 6 hamsters all solitary and can't exactly afford to go back out and buy cages and what not.. unless I was lucky enough that the fire didn't burn down my bedroom which odds ate my room be the first to go considering it's directly above the kitchen.. we're very careful when it comes to fire so it's a 99.99999% chance my house will never go on fire but incase were that 0.00001 percent chance there is 3 of us in the house and to evacuate our selves as well as 2 dogs and then 6 hamsters.. And can you imagine trying to evacuate 6 untamed roborovskis? We would all go down with the hoise.. it's a horrible thought.. but luckily it'll never ever happen cos we're so careful

I never even considered evacuation. We here in California just got evacuated in February for flooding and the oroville dam damage so this is a great idea. Will do this and get some carriers. Thank you!

I just posted questions about evacuation, in a Facebook forum I belong to....and up pops this thread today! :-)

I live on the west coast of FL and although I have yet to be evacuated, I want to be ready in case of any emergency. This is fantastic information.

When my house caught on fire, I had to evacuate my hamsters. I used a bin that had a barrier down the middle. It had bedding already in it, and I had food and boredom breakers in a ziploc bag. I had a water bottle to.
