While baby hamsters are adorable, the average hamster owner should definitely not breed! Its just not fair to the hamster to breed them and not know what you're doing, and that can result in your hamster being hurt or even killed.

I'll be honest that someday, maybe, I'd like to have my own hamstery, but not until I have access to everything and the knowledge of everything on this list. It's just too important to know what you're doing before you take lives into your hands.

This article honestly reminds me of my pet store, since I can't adopt, I have already shopped a female hamster from them and ended up getting more little critters, although some died, and some were eaten because who knows what, we still have three, my sister wanted one so I gave her one, and I own two boys(?) I know one is a boy for sure but they are either brothers or brother and sister, so I sorta have a whole little family right now :/

If you can post pictures in a topic of the babies undersides, we can help you out :). Are they being kept in the same tanks? If they are I can't stress enough the dangers of inbreeding (on top of that I assume that they are Syrians, who are very territorial).

Brilliant post!

My old hamster was dumped in a box with loads of other hamsters to die by a breeder who just didn't care about them. If people actually thought before breeding then my toffee would have never had to go through the pain he did : poor ham

They never hold still for picture :| whenever I get a good one, I'm lucky. Yes, sadly at the store they are in the same tanks  :gloomy:  but it is the ONLY pet store where I live, and if I try to correct them they might not sell stuff to me. Yes they are Syrians, making it even worse.

(The ones I own are in separate enclosures)

Might I add that in several countries, intentional improper breeding of animals is considered as a form of animal cruelty and can be punishable by law.

Me and my friends once thought Lightning was a boy. They dared me to breed "him" with my female Syrian hamster Syria. Lightning is a ROBO, and is like 4 times the size of Syria, and we took two boxes, taped them together, and cut a hole. The opening was taped shut with clear tape, so the hams couldn't get to each other, but they could see each other. We also put their cages next to each other. I now KNOW  that two different species shouldn't be introduced, PLEASE DO NOT REMIND ME NOT TO INTRODUCE THEM. We even put them together for short amounts of time. Once they got into a fight, and they never saw each other again. I was cleaning their cages out, and I still had the boxes, so I put them in. I didn't pay attention and Syria chewed through the tape, and was sitting in a corner of Lightning's box, while Lightning was running on her wheel! I put them back in their own cages imediately. (IDK how to spell that) A few weeks later, my friends came over, and we took Syria out. I was not paying attention at all, and I put Syria into Lightning's cage. Lightning has 2 wheels, one 4 inch and one 6 inch. Syria was on the 6 inch silent spinner, and Lightning was on the 4 inch! After I noticed, I rushed over to the hams and put Syria back into her own cage. In no way, I am saying it's okay to breed or introduce hamsters, because it's not. I just wanted to share my experiance.

Absolutely. Giving birth and nursing pups takes a ton of energy out of the mother. Combine that with a careless breeding (mother is not fit to be bred - too young, too old, mildly malnourished, sick, etc.) and you have a recipe for disaster.

Back when I was a kid, me and my mom and ex-step-dad had bought two hamsters from a pet store, and when we found out they were a boy and girl she had gotten pregnant and my mom then decided what a brilliant, money making opportunity this was, and so goes the story of how we they unethically bred winter whites..

I'm much older now, and sadly looking back on the situation I'm really upset at the whole thing, especially since my baby (the mother) Candy ended up passing away during birth, and now I know it was because she was simply too old..

Thank you Taxonomist for this, it helped me a lot with coping and understanding. Even though it's been a while, I recently adopted a syrian, and doing so has made me wonder about the past and what could have been done differently, all the things my parents had done wrong, and the most important what not to do now, and even though I still feel really guilty and miss her a lot, I know I was too little to even know what went wrong then.

Okay enough of my life story XD I'll shut up now, long story short, thank you.

Well done! You know in Asia, people breed their hamsters very often (all my hamster owners friend bred their hamsters) cause they don't know about these facts and yet hamsters here are very affordable making them some kind of amusement for most of the Asian lol.
