Hi Everyone

Feel free to ignore this

Don't quite know how to put this.... but it seems really mean not to offer so here goes: if anyone needs some help with any maths-related worries please reply to this or PM me. I'm half-way through a university maths course (BSc) and I'd be really happy to help if I can. I'm not a teacher, and I know there's loads of help out there anyway, but if you need me I am here!

did that come over ok???? :veryhappy:

Most calculators have a % button, but the easiest way to work out percentages is to remember that they are really just another way of writing down a fraction.....

So:

The answer to the example is
Spoiler (Highlight to Read):
60% of 180 = 108

Hope that's helped a little..... percentages on a calculator can be a bit of a thorny issue because of a thing called "The order of operations", which is just a list of rules for what order division, addition, multiplication etc actually have to be done in to get the correct answer :faint:

Let me know if it was as clear as mud.... I'll try again

percentages on a calculator can be a bit of a thorny issue because of a thing called "The order of operations",

Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction OR...

Please
Excuse
My
Dear
Aunt
Sally

Just a way to remember it! Also, scientific calculators (and any calculator more "complicated" than that) will sort out the order itself, so you can push things in as you like, and the calculator will figure out the order of operations for you.

Continuing on that 60% of 180 example, you can also turn the percent into a decimal. 60% is 60/100, which reduces down to 6/10, which, as a decimal, is .6 So you can do .6 x 180, and still get the same answer. :)

I never understand percentages...suddenly this year, it clicked!

Be really, really careful with relying on a calculator ;) ..... I've got a Texas Voyage 200, which can do algebra, 3D graphing etc and it wouldn't let me get away with this

I love your order of operations 'rhyme' Southpaw ----> I was taught boring old BIDMAS

Brackets
Indices
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

Excusing Aunt Mavis is much more fun and easier to remember

I've got a good 'un to remember the trig ratios:

Wow CM24, you're a whole 2 years ahead :faint: I loved maths when I was at primary school but really switched-off when I went to secondary school.... Stick with the maths because, as soon as you get beyond the basics, it starts to open up into a really beautiful subject :hyper:

I think that we're one year-out here in the UK, so our year 7 (ages 11-12) is the US year 6..... is that right? :scratchchin:

It seems that the US system allows more space to actually work-out who you are, what you like and then do the heavier studying, whereas I felt that as soon as I got into year 7 (secondary school), the attitude was "get on with it" :boggled:

Maybe it's just that the grass is alway greener in another field ;)

Great, I'm so glad it's been a little help ;D

If there are any areas where some basic info would be handy (trig, algebra, calculus, etc etc..) let me know and I'll post it

if anyone needs some help with any maths-related worries please reply to this or PM me.

Wow, you are going to get a bombardment of PM's!! I am horrible at math, you'll probably get some questions from me!
Lol, at the beginning of the year my teacher said "at the end of the year, you guys are going to know so much math that it'll be sick. I wouldn't be suprised if your 7th grade math teachers send you out into the hall for knowing so much!" I was sitting there going "Oh, great :sarcastic: "

Maybe I'd better go and get some coffee then :tired: lol!

I love all this sort of stuff (I was probably dropped on my head when I was a baby ;) ) so give me a yell if you want to have a math-chat  I've got some really snazzy software ---> mathtype, mathcad and a USB link for my graphics calculator, so I should be able to put all the info up reasonably clearly! ;D

I really hated maths lessons at school..... especially the ones on rainy days that followed double PE ----> why was it always netball outside when it rained?! :faint:

kewl Georgie Girl! I loove math! i just love challenges! ehhehe :)

Got another question:

If i expand (2x + 1) (3X + 2), the answer is 6x(squared) + 7x + 2.

Problem is, if a teacher gave me 6x(squared) + 7x + 2, how would i factorize it and turn it into (2x +1) (3x +2) ? I only leant (x+2)(x+4) = x(squared) + 6x + 2, and turning it back into (x+2)(x+4).

BTW, i think this is a great topic! Im gonna pin this!

It's great that you've made this topic a 'sticky' Nelson; wow....maths and hamsters: my two obsessions in one place

I've explained how I'd approach this one.... but these factorizations are often a matter of guess-work and 'feel'. I love jigging equations about
