Hi I am new. So I'm here to learn more about syrian hamsters, and I'm hoping to get one some day. So here is some facts about me:

I am female, I am a teenager, I own 3 geckos, a dog and 2 cats, I want to work with animals as an adult. I owned a roborovski hamster in the past, Penny, but I didn't do research and gave it the worst life possible (The smallest critter trail they sell with absolutely no tubes, it was probably about 8-10 inches long, ate bird seeds, everything about my care was wrong), And I wanna try again with a syrian, but first I wanna do a lot of research and show my parents I'm responsible and ready to try again. Hamster care advice is welcome down below :D Hope I'm accepted here LOL!

Hi! Heres some care advice :)

I hope to see you around!

Syrians do best with 1000+ sq inches, and females may need much more, so DIY cages are best for them.

Crittertrail tubes don't provide a whole lot of enrichment.

Some good food mixes in the USA are higgins sunburst+mazuri rat and mouse (only rat block safe for hammys) or purebites dog treats.

I have a feeling you should do your own research, so here are a few links to get you started!

f course your accepted here! HH accepts everyone (except for spammers, BYB's you get what I mean).

Hello, Whitewhiskers!  It's great that you're doing research, I find that by doing so, I not only I feel assured that my hamster will be getting the best life possible, but that the community surrounding hamster care is so much fun to be a part of.

lil BIG dwarf gave some really helpful info to get you started on research- it may take a while, but I would read as much of the Master List as possible and ask any and all questions you will have.  There are lots of experienced and well-rounded owners on this forum, so it's a great place to learn!

If you don't mind, I'd like to offer some tips on forum etiquette that I give out to all the newbies:

  • Before you ask a question, it would be a good idea to do a search for it, check out the pinned topics under the appropriate board, and/or see if the master list has any articles about it.  That way, you might answer your own question, and if not, you could potentially gain some background information.

  • You might see a few people telling you to "PM (Private Message) me if you have questions!".  While they are trying to be helpful and welcoming, it's better to make a public post on the forum.  That way, you can get many different people's opinions and, in the future, people having the same problem can search for it.

  • Make sure to clearly title all of your posts.  It's not uncommon for people to write "Help!" or "What should I do?", which is not all that helpful.  Try to clearly and concisely state your problem so that people who can help you will be attracted to your post.  Again, this also makes it easier to search for in the future.

  • If you see that someone replied to a post and you agree with that person, it's better to "Like" their reply than to leave another one saying the same thing.  Especially if you're being critical of someone, you don't want to bombard that person with multiples of basically the same message.  It may make them feel ganged up on and could be tedious for them to read through.

  • One more thing: make sure to only post one thread per problem under the appropriate board.  For example, if you notice your hamster sneezing and you're wondering if it's because of your bedding choice, don't make two threads called "Hamster sneezing" and "Is this bedding safe?".  It would be better to put it all in one place under the "Ailments & Injuries" board because that would be useful information to have- so it's better to make a post called "Hamster sneezing- dusty bedding?".

Hi welcome to HH! I have been here for a few months and I have had my first hamster sweetie for 6 months now and she is a robo so I don't exactly have any experience with Syrians so far but I do know they need a lot of space and sometimes even the most space possible they aren't satisfied and that is ok.

Current studies show 1500 sq inches with a good amount of bedding will satisfy most syrians. OP actually just adopted a robo though :)
