I couldn't tell how long I was surrounded in white. It felt like I was just floating there, not even alive. And then, just like last time, there was a flash of blinding lights and I was lying by a ball of fur.

 

"Aww, you're my only babies. I thought I'd have at least seven. But you guys are so cute!" A Winter White dwarf hamster said, smiling at me and the others.

She was surrounded with two hamsters that looked like me. Brown with some dark markings. They... they must be my siblings. I don't understand, how? I shook my head. Had I died? I must have. Then I guess... I'm still Sapphire but I'm reborn as another hamster. Wait, what!? 

 

I looked around. I was in a tiny area. I was lying under a tiny blue wheel with a food bowl an inch away from me. The water bottle was crammed in between the food bowl and the wheel. There was a tube leading to a tiny level above me. There were metal bars all around.

"Hmm... I'll name you Kiwi," She pointed to me, "And you two are Peach and Apricot." She looked at the other two.

"Mama, I'm Sapphire! I'm not Kiwi!" I squeaked.

She looked at me and laughed, shaking her head.

"Honey, you're name is Kiwi!" She patted my head and stood up, leaving me and my siblings alone.

"I'm bored. Wanna play hide and seek?" Apricot said, standing up.

Peach laughed.

"Um. In case you haven't noticed, there's no where to hide. We are living in a cage that our mom barely fits in, and she's not much bigger than us." Peach said, looking a little sad.

Apricot looked around. The excitement in her eyes faded away.

"Oh... right." She lay back down beside me and closed her eyes.

 

Mom came back and fed us some corn and pellets. We slept for the rest of the day.

 

 

I woke up in the middle of the day, tired and thirsty. The family who took care of us forgot to give us water from time to time. They were not that bad, but they were obviously oblivious to the fact that hamsters can't live in cages that are smaller than pillows. I saw the family every day. The boy in the family was always whining about how he didn't want to take care of us and that he wasn't going to do it any more.

 

"You wanted a hamster though!" The mother had said, frustrated.

"I just wanted it because it was cute! I NEVER AGREED TO PROVIDE THE STUPID ANIMAL WITH ANY CARE!" The young boy shouted, storming up the stairs and furiously typing on his phone.

"Then we're giving it back!"

"FINE!"

 

I was too tired to fully understand the conversation. 

 

That night, I woke up with my mom and the rest of my siblings and played a little with them. Then, all of a sudden, we were grabbed and put into a tiny box.

"Oh boy... we'll be okay, my dears. I'll protect you guys if anything happens." My mom whimpered, covering all of us with her body.

We were shoved around the box until we got dumped into a tiny tank in a loud store.

"This is not good. We're in a pet store. Oh, this isn't good at all." My mother said absent-mindedly, rushing around the tank. 

At least there's soft bedding. I thought and miserably lay down.

At least there's soft bedding. I thought and miserably lay down. I kept my eyes open for a while, staring at my arm that was laid in front of me. As I thought about things, it came to my realization that there were marks on my arm. Many of them. What are those? I thought, my brows furrowing. I sat up and looked at them. There were 20 small black lines. The top one was was barely there, it had been faded. Wait- these... they represent something. But what?

 

I decided to ignore the peculiar marks and hope they would go away.

"Mommy! Mommy look! Mommy! MOMMY!" A toddler shouted, knocking on our tank.

I gasped and cowered at the back of the tank with my other siblings, my mom trying to cover us from view.

"Yes, honey?"

"Lookie! There's hamsters! I really really really want one mommy....." The boy pouted at his mom.

"I'm so sorry, honey. We can't get them. You know your dad doesn't want any other animals except our dog in the house."

"But mommy, it will barely take up any space! Look at the cages, their smaller than the doggy!"

"I know, but we just can't get one. Sorry."

 

My mom rolled her eyes. The other human mom took the wailing boy by the arm and went into the dog aisle.

"Mom, is anyone going to adopt us?" I asked her, sighing.

"Adoption isn't always a good thing, Kiwi. Most humans think hamsters can live in tiny cages like the one you guys were born in."

"Oh." 

 

For the rest of the day, me and my siblings played together. There's nothing to do here, it's so boring. And the food... it's yummy, but I'd like to have more foods to taste. More variety to taste.

 

And suddenly, I was grabbed by a giant hand. I was dropped into a cardboard box very similar to the one that transported me to the pet store. 

"Help!" I cried.

No response.

And suddenly, I was grabbed by a giant hand. I was dropped into a cardboard box very similar to the one that transported me to the pet store. 

"Help!" I cried.

No response. I paced around the small box, looking for any places to escape out of. I missed everyone. I missed my old mom, Amber, Ivy, Iris, my current mom, Apricot, and Peach.

 

After a few hours, the box was aggressively opened and I was thrown into a bin. I tensed and ran to a corner, not even looking at my surroundings.

"Hey... are you okay?" A familiar voice asked.

I looked up. That's... what? My eyes widened and I looked around. That's Amber... and those two are Ivy and Iris! I'm back at the bin in the mill!

"Sissy! Guys, I missed you!" I said, standing up and smiling.

"Wait, are you calling me sister? I'm not your sister? You must have hit your head pretty bad when you fell in here. My name is Amber, I am a sibling to those 2 hamsters, but not you." Amber said, not rudely.

 

But that's Amber! How could she not recognize me?! I looked down at myself. Oh... right. I am a totally new hamster now. 

"Okay Amber, listen. I am your sibling. Remember Sapphire? I'm her, just I died and I'm a new hamster now. But in my past life, I was Sapphire." I said slowly, looking for any emotion on my sisters face.

"Who... I vaguely remember someone named Sapphire. But no, I really don't think she was my sibling. Oh, and you obviously hit your head horribly. No one can remember their past lives!" Amber ushered me to sit down, while my other siblings looked like they agreed with her. 

I was outraged.

They don't remember me.

 

I spent a sad week in the bin with my family. They treated me like a hamster they were friends and not close with... but deep inside I could tell they somehow recognized me, but didn't know how and denied the feeling. When I died, something must have happened. Maybe that's the consequence of me being able to remember my past life- no one remembers me. I have to find a way to make them realize it's me. And I also need to figure out what these weird marks are. 

 

"Hah, their like lives. I died once so one is faded." I giggled to myself, then stopped abruptly.

 

Wait.. what if they do represent my lives? That means... woah. That means I have 20 lives to spend, and after I use all of them... I'll be gone, I guess. Wow, that's so weird. I've never seen any hamsters that have this.

 

"Must be some sort of curse. But why, why me?" I shaked my head, sighing.
