Hi everyone!

I thought I would do this for fun and also because I will be upgrading my Syrians enclosure in the future and am curious to know what other people are doing/what they would like to do!

So, what is your ideal Syrian hamster enclosure size? This can be what you have currently or your perfect/ideal number of square inches(or cm).

If you could conjure an enclosure how of thin air right now, how big would you have it be?

I'd say around 1,000 sq inches for a male

1,500+ for a female

For a syrian? Hmmmm,,,, I guess it depends on the hamster itself but if I wanted to be on the safe side (plus magically conjuring an enclosure out of thin air would be cheap) I'd do 3000 square inches to 5000 square inches. They'd be happier and I'd be happier since I'd barely have to clean the enclosure plus this magical enclosure did not cost anything haha. But since the average pet owner cannot have such a big enclosure due to lack of space or they can't afford it (cough cough the pax is cheap cough cough), then I think 1500 to 3000 square inches is decent. :-)

My Syrian boy currently has 775 square inches. He seems happy enough, but I think I could improve his life if I had room for more hides and accessories and a larger sand bath. I'd say about 1250 would be ideal. Unfortunately my current cage is the largest commercial cage on the market in the UK, and I'm really not comfortable making a DIY cage at all. I have no DIY experience, no tools, and no space! I really think hamster care would improve in the UK if there were better products on the market.

My Syrian is currently in a 1,000 sq in cage. If I could just conjure up a cage, I would probably choose one about 1,500-2,000 sq in. Mostly because my room is tiny (all I have for furniture is a loft bed and a dresser and I can still barely fit in all of my hams’ cages as is). If space constraints also weren’t an issue I’d probably just do something like 3,000-6,000 sq in just because haha.

I agree with lilhams, I would absolutely not say the commonly recommended ~1000-1500sq in is not the ideal size. It's a great starting point, and many hamsters can be happy in cages that size, but I would consider it nowhere near ideal for most hamsters. If I were able to build another cage intended for a syrian right now I would do something in the 3500-4000 range, also making it +36" tall for tons of bedding. Granted, I have the space for that sort of thing in my room and I realize not everyone does, so if I were speaking for you I'd just say go as big as you can. Find a big ol' space to take up and plan to put a cage there.

As large as I could possibly go, or whatever the hamster is happy in. My hamster glacier is in a diy cage with 1,200 square inches of floorspace, and that’s what it took to make him happy. For a reccomend number, 1000+, but what I think is important is what your hamster is happy in.

Lol if I could conjure an enclosure out of thin air? Like 7,000 square inches of floorspace, because why not?

Well, if we're talking ideal, I would say 3000+

I also think its important to have a lot of height (like ~Robin~ said above). I would go for 36 inches tall.

I think whatever your hamster is happy in :-)

As many people said ^^^, 2000+ sq inches of space is ideal, but my hamster is perfectly happy in his 200 qt bin, which is ~650 sq inches of space.

I would definitely go bigger if I could, but I really can't right now with my parents. However, they did say they'll let me buy him more enrichment things soon! <3

I would aim for at least 1000, closer to 2000-3000 sq inches if you can.

Perfect sizes, I would say ~4000. There are a couple DIY's that are that size, and it wouldnt be the hardest to fill with toys & deep bedding.

Some hamsters may be happy in 650, however some may need 4000.

My IDEAL Syrian cage? I take a small bedroom and convert it completely, filling it 3' deep with bedding. Although then I'd never see them I guess, so... display quality plexi or glass enclosure of say at least 8' x 4 x 4'. Lots of platforms and natural decor on top, some cool tunnel and burrow inclusions on the walls below bedding level.

I would convert my bedroom, or get a 3000 pax. But my parents are letting me have a 75 gallon tank instead. They would never allow a pax. Lol.
Maybe when I’m on my own.

hehe i have a diy cage for my dwarf in around 1000 sq in and 24 inches tall, but idk if im just short but cleaning it literally kills my back lollllllllll ye... prob just me being short lol

i probably wouldn't be able to reach the bottom of a 36"+ tall cage lol
