Ok I don’t even know how to begin this but….

So most of the people I’ve come across on hh have or have had a Syrian hamster. Idk why but that kind of makes me feel bad since I’ve never owned a Syrian hamster and I probably won’t in a long time. It’s crazy because I see everyone’s amazing cages that are from 1000 to even 3000 square feet and.. well I’m just waiting until I can get a big enough cage. I’m thinking of building one out of a desk but it would only be 945 square inches and I’ve always wanted a female Syrian so I’m not sure it would work. I’m just sad that it’s not that easy for me to own a Syrian hamster. I know that sounds immature but..yeah.

It is hard, isn't it., when you want a certain type or species of hamster, but don't want to or can't get them for some reason? For example, I'd love to have a robo, I think they're sooooo cute, but the fact that they're so hard to tame really puts me off of getting one, (plus around here they're hard to find besides in pet stores). Do you already have the desk, or are you thinking of getting it in the future? If it's the latter, I mu=ight be able to help find something for around the same price that would be bigger.

I know what you mean! I had a female Syrian in a 75 gallon for a bit, and I’d be lying if I said she was content. I love Syrians (and dwarfs), but I don’t think I could handle another Syrian unless I’m a better alternative (compared to a previous home).

Can I ask, why do you want a female Syrian? Even in massive (1500+ sq inches) cages with deep bedding they can be u nhappy unfortunately, and there aren’t big differences between males and females.

I once had this dream that I had an orange female Syrian hamster who was super sweet, I named her Tigger and I had a close bond with her, which is strange because it was just a dream. But after that I’ve had my heart set on a hamster like that. But I mean, I’m pretty ok with Syrian hamsters of both genders I guess. I dunno,  I just kind of want a Syrian to see what it’s like.

I once had this dream that I had an orange female Syrian hamster who was super sweet, I named her Tigger and I had a close bond with her, which is strange because it was just a dream. But after that I’ve had my heart set on a hamster like that. But I mean, I’m pretty ok with Syrian hamsters of both genders I guess. I dunno,  I just kind of want a Syrian to see what it’s like.

I don’t think it’s that strange! At the same time, keep in mind that even if you find a hamster with the same coloration and i, you may not have the same kind of bond, as that tends to be uncommon with hamsters. You could contact an ethical breeder and ask about a Syrian with a similar coloration and temperament, though.

Yeah I don’t really care about holding it and stuff. And yeah breeders aren’t common in my area. I think I would probably just adopt and random hamster that needs to be adopted (ig male would be the best for now) but right now I already have my hands full with Boba and Hazel. I’m just kind of sad because it seems like everyone just gets these big cages instantly and the hamster is happy. Not mad at anyone obviously, but I don’t know it makes me feel sort of behind in the hamster community.

Yeah, I might've felt similarly when I had only had two syrians and everyone else was experienced with dwarfs... But getting a big cage and the hamster being instant happy (imagining a giant cage in a store labelled as "INSTANT HAPPY" right now )  doesn't often happen. Honestly, I'm not sure that when I upgraded Nibbles he was happy, but he soon slowed down with old age so it didn't really matter. I hope that you find your dream syrian soon and that their happy in your care.

Not weird at all. What I've learned from fostering and rescuing is each species has VERY different behaviors. It's cool to experience them all. And don't worry when you are an adult like me, no one (but maybe your spouse needs to agree) can stop you from owning whatever you want lol
