Hi! So I have a wooden wheel with bumps on it much like this one: https://www.amazon.ca/Hamster-Exercise-Running-Chinchillas-Hedgehogs/dp/B07QWK6F62?th=1 (but not exactly)

It’s 11 inches, so definitely big enough for a roborovski. Yet I’ve had many people tell me it’s unsafe, and I’ve even seen some YouTubers say the same. So, I will be upgrading ASAP! I’m currently on vacation, but I get home in less than a week now, so I’ll be able to buy him a new one.

But one thing I’m confused about is how this is different than a plastic wheel with bumps! As far as I’m concerned the bumps are to help with grip when running, and I don’t see how it could injure a hamster. (Note: I’m not saying it’s safe in anyway, I’m just a bit confused and I’m simply looking for a more

in-depth description on how it’s unsafe.)

I was also wondering if there is any way I could salvage the wheel, as I spent over 40$ on it! Either by making it safe to use as a wheel, or even another accessory for his enclosure.

What hamster wheels are recommended, that I can buy to replace it?

Thanks in advance,

these wheels are dangerous because sometimes their feet can't move fast enough over the ridges and they can bleed

here's a pic (tw blood)

you could fix it by either sanding them down so the surface is completely smooth or covering the track with adhesive cork sheets
