This was extremely helpful post! I have had an experience with a really nervous hamster, it took us about a month to get him comfortable with us and if we left him alone for a day or two he would go back to being slightly nervous with us again.
I have a question about the leaving period, I know that it is a few days etc etc, but do you leave the cage uncovered or do you put a blanket or light sheet on top? I have been researching different theories about this and was curious to know what other people have done in the past. We are planning to get two robos in September and I know already from people on here that they can be difficult to tame so I want to know as much as possible about taming in general beforehand.

Sorry it got cut off!
Should I wait until I'm back from my dads to begin interacting, or should I ease my excitement by starting tonight?

Is 1 day enough to wait before interaction? I got my hamster yesterday, I am EXTREMELY busy tomorrow, and Wednesday-Sunday (will be home sunday night) I am at my dads house. Sh

I dont recommend that you handle your hamster too soon, but if you'd like, I guess you could try to give your hamster little treats through the bars, to tell your hamster that you're not a threat, and speak in a soft voice whilst doing that
however if your hamster freaks out and runs to ride even before you open the cage door, then i guess you should wait till monday to begin interaction. don't worry! there's lots of time, no need to hurry hehe
all the best in your taming endeavours!

Thank you! My little Pip lives in a 20 gallon aquarium, so I attempted holding a treat out for her, but I think she was sleeping, so she didn't take it. Oops! Guess I'll try again when she wakes up!

I went a week to let Jolene settle in and I used an awesome method, I layed down a towel in my tub and I just sat in there with her and I gave her some treats and stuff and we really bonded!!

great post Mika i can really relate to this because when i first got Misty he was extremely shy and would always go and hide. but i let him be for the first two weeks and then i started trying to tame him. it turned out great! now he comes over and hops on my hand whenever i put it in! he is so precious
Every hamster is special!

I left Dougie for 2 days, then tried to touch him and he bit me. I left it another day and then tried again, but this time with some food in my hand. He sniffed at it for a minuet, and then put his front paws on my hands and took the food. I kept doing this but putting my hand a little futher out of the cage each time. Now he crawls all over me and he has never bitten me since!

Great post! I wish I would have seen it earlier though…I got my hamster yesterday(he is a winter white) and did not wait at all to let him adjust… I tried taming today(another thing I did wrong) and he is totally skittish! Is there anything I can do besides let him adjust for a couple of days to make him more tame?

yes, tofu my new baby is very skittish and has a rather powerful bite.
my first hamster was super chilled out from day one, so i'd never been bitten before. however the blood pouring (quite literally) out of my finger was a wake up call that some hamsters just need a little more time than others.
