One of the things I was wondering is can the dry food spoil? Right now I have a small bag but I originally thought of getting a large bag of food for her. The concern was would a large bag spoil before it was empty
hmmm i'm not sure maybe if it was in an airtight container it would make sure it defonately wouldn't but i don't really know if it can

I've heard of the Versele Laga Hamster Nature as a very good food, with good variety of high quality components

Incredibly thorough! I am preparing to get my first hamster (well the first one I will actually be providing for) and this helps me know what I should look for when buying his/her food. Thank You.

Hey everyone! This helped SO much! I feed my hamster the "Sunseed hamster and Gerbil formula." I took out the corn("whole corn,11th on the ingredients list), sunflower seeds(8th on the ingredients list), and pellets ("Dehydrated alfalfa meal", 4th on the ingredients list). I feed 1 sunflower seed per week, 1 piece of corn per week and the pellets are substituted by 2 oxbows everyday.I feed my robo hamster 1 spoonful of what's left of the mix, and the 2 oxbows every other day. I am thinking about adding to her diet soon, but for now this is what she eats. Is this diet okay??
This would be best as it's own thread, but the short answer is no, this isn't an ok diet. You're removing a major source of protein, and vitamins and minerals along with risking greatly unbalancing the diet by removing any of the ingredients. You can read more on that here- http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/topic/94565-diet-myths-debunked/

this is not a good diet at all if I may ask, what made you think that this is a good diet? You practically removed everything from his diet (I hope you don't mind, I don't know the sex of your hamster so I'm calling him a he) one sunflower seed per week is rediculous, you can feed your hamster 2-3 sunflower seeds per day, in addition to the sunflower seeds that are already in his mix. So what makes you think one sunflower seed per week is good? Why do you take out the corn? It is no longer considered a filler and it is not going to give your hamster diabetes. It is, just like the sunflower seed, part of the nutrients in the mix. The pellets are also a necessary part of the diet. Do not remove any parts of the diet. Replacing the pellets with oxbow rings is also a mistake. Oxbow has pretty much no nutritional value. The only thing it does when added to a mix is bring down the nutrition. You're already bringing down the nutrition by taking out all of this food and only giving it once a week. When you read the side of the bag the food comes in. It has the nutrients (GA) that the mix has. When you start taking stuff out of the mix, the GA is no longer correct, if you want your hamster to be consuming the nutrients located on the bag, I suggest keeping all the the ingredients in. I'm assuming you're removing sunflower seeds because you think they're too fatty? They give more nutrients than just fat. They also give protein, which I'm not sure about your mix, but chances are it's low on protein and removing the sunflower seeds just lowers it even more. The thought that the sunflower seeds are too fattening and should be taken out of the mix is a myth. Again, the Gaurenteed Analysis (GA) comes in hand. The fat levels in the mix should be the amount of fat a hamster needs (4-7%). Therefore the seeds in the mix aren't making it too fattening for your hamster. They're making the fat the correct amount for your hamster.Hey everyone! This helped SO much! I feed my hamster the "Sunseed hamster and Gerbil formula." I don't mean to sound rude and make it seem like you're doing everything wrong, you asked if it was a good diet and I am simply answering that it is not and informing you of why.
Edit: I agree with nebit this should really be it's own thread.

no problemOk, thanks. I was on YouTube and lots of YouTubers were saying stuff like "sunflower seeds and corn are way too fattening, ecspessially to a small robo hamster and should be given as occasional treats." And "those pellets that are in every mix are made up of junk that no hamster ever eats, so you should just remove them and not make them take up room in a diet." I understand your point and will do what you suggested: returning everything to the diet. Thanks for helping me. Now that I actually think about it, it makes sense. Once again, thank you! I am not offended but my hamster is a girl. Her name is CoCo.

no problem
and those are old and out-dated videos, the point of view in most hamster care has since changed.
