Chapter Two - Lara’s Perspective
SpoilerI stared at Wren, feeling myself shiver at the thought of going home. She locked eyes with me, and I felt myself sweating with anxiety. Please, please, Wren. I thought desperately. I knew she wouldn’t help, or ask for that matter. Why, why does the last person apart from me in school have to be Wren? I wish I just could stay in school forever. Home, my worst nightmare. Wren walked away, curling a strand of her hair with her finger, listening to music. I sighed as she closed the gate behind her. I slowly sat down, to rest my face in my hands. That’s when I felt a hand squeeze my shoulder. I jerked my head to see Miss Fonn, one of the teachers here. Miss Fonn had a dog as her spirit animal to represent friendliness.
“Lara dear, is everything alright? Why aren’t you going home?” She said softly.
“Oh, uhm,” I searched my brain for an excuse. “I just think I lost my keys to home... my parents will be so mad at me...” I lied, a lie which Miss Fonn believed.“Oh dear, that’s a shame. I’m sure your parents will let you in the house without your keys if you just knock.” She said. I nodded. ”Off you go now, we’ll find your keys tomorrow.” She patted me on the back, and popped a lemon sherbert in the palm of my hand, winking. I smiled politely and made my way out of school.
Out of safety. I dreaded the moment when I would reach my front door. Maybe the lemon sherbert will distract me, they are awfully sour after all. I winced as the sour taste flooded me. Eeugh! It was rather bitter, but did the job.
I stopped sucking on the sweet when I reached the door. I tucked my hair behind my ears and fished my keys from my pocket. I barely managed to open the door, I was trembling so much. The door creaked open, and I was greeted by my mother, hands on hips, a stern expression displayed. I swallowed, trying not to say anything.
“The pest is home” Mother spat. “Would the pest like to come to the dark room?” She threatened.
The dark room was the worst thing ever. I avoided her gaze, letting out a squeak.
“It’s rude to ignore people you know.” Mother said. She paused, tapping her foot against the wooden floorboards. I opened my mouth to say “no” but nothing came out. “I’m guessing it’s dark room time, eh?” She said, grabbing my arm, gripping tight. I screamed, but she took no notice, pulling me upstairs into the dark room.
The lights were off. I couldn’t see my own hands. I couldn’t see my mother. But she could see me. Her spirit animal, an eagle, glared at me. Her eagle represented that she was always watching you. At least to me, it does. I suddenly screamed in pain and I felt her pounce on me, slapping me, digging her nails into my skin. The eagle’s talons did the same.
I passed out.
Warning: this chapter features slightly disturbing abuse.
This is really good! I like the spirit animals involved which really represent the characters! You're such an amazing writer!! <333
