I was wishing this day wouldn’t come. My wish didn’t come true.
I moaned, as the alarm clock screamed for me to wake up. If I could just sleep forever, this day would have never happened. This day was the first day of school. This day was the day I had to suffer bullying again. I gritted my teeth. Lara. I thought.
“Wren?” My younger sister popped her head into my room.
“What do you need, Sunny.” I said, rubbing my eyes.
“I... I just thought you need some cheering up.” She whispered. I looked up at her, realising what she meant. Her two pet rats, Jingle and Bee, were snuggled in her hoodie pocket. I sighed, thankful that I had such a kind sister. Sunny smiled, gently letting the rats crawl onto my lap. It was obvious they didn’t like me as much as Sunny, but I didn’t mind. They were lovely female rats, who Sunny adored. Jingle climbed up my arm, and perched on my shoulder. I giggled, wiping away the tears.
“Here you go Sunny, I think it’s best if I go to get breakfast now, then to school.” I said.
There it was. School. The gate right in front of me. I took a deep breath and walked inside, keeping my head low.
“Ooh, it’s Wrennn, the nerd!” They chanted. I continued walking, and put my headphones on, listening to music and blocking out the laughter. But I was stopped, as someone darted right in front of me. Ginger-haired, brown-eyed Lara. Of course, it’s always going to be her. I slid the headphones off and tucked them into my bag.
“That’s better.” She said. “It’s rude to ignore people you know.”
I said nothing, just rolled my eyes.
“Hey, Wren, you trying to act strong?” Lara said in a mockingly way. The crowd laughed.
“Shut up, Lara. For starters, what do you know about what I’m acting or not?” I hissed back at her.
Lara burst into giggles, then smirked, shoving me by the shoulder.
“Oh, Wren... poor you.” She chuckled, before walking away proudly, with an admiring crowd following her.
I furiously stormed into the locker rooms, threw my bag into my locker, snd slammed the door shut.
“Had a bad day already?” I turned to the sound, it was Tally, the only person at school who cared. She was short, awkwardly small, had glasses and brown hair tied in a ponytail.
“Honestly, I’m done with all of this.” I spat. Tally nodded at me, then gave me a brief hug before running off to class. I figured I should do the same.
The rest of the day was normal. Mr T reminding us about the Taming Ceremony on Friday, only two days from now. Lara making fun of me, laughter echoing inside my head. Tally attempting to comfort me, but was really not helping at all. I longed to go home. The time finally came.
Mother greeted me at the door.
“Wren, my little songbird, how was it?” She asked sweetly, although I knew she knew how it was. She knew I had a bad day.
“Terrible.” I said. Mother sighed, and let me go straight up to see Sunny. The only person I knew who made things better.
Sunny smiled as I opened the door. I liked Sunny, she never asked how things were, she never reminded me about what happened.
“The rats aren’t awake yet, but look what I made for them!” She happily chirped, holding up a foraging she made out of finished toilet rolls.
“Looks nice, Sunny” I said, forcing a smile. Sunny grinned and put it down. But that friendly, bright, happy face flashed a sign of worry and sadness. I could tell she was fighting her worry. For me. But why, why would she fight so hard, for me?
“We better go for dinner, father’s cooked pasta tonight!” She said enthusiastically. Father’s never been a great cook, but Sunny always manages to say something positive.
But I couldn’t forget the way Lara looked at me worriedly, almost desperately, at the end of school. When it was just me, and just her.
