Chapter 5: Hamster's Perspective
I did it! I took the seed! I could feel the happiness radiating from her! I wonder if she’ll come back tonight. I hope so. I made a big decision. I decided to celebrate taking the seed by eating more seeds! Huzzah! So be it! I gorged myself, then fell into a deep sleep, not waking up until 11:00 p.m. Then I waited for her, until finally she came with the box. This time, she placed her hand inside the cage. I sniffed at it. There was a walnut in the center. I put two paws on her hand and ate the nut, thinking of the days when I didn’t get showered with walnuts, seeds and oats. It seemed unthinkable now. I looked in the hand. There weren’t any nuts in it this time. Not thinking, I started to walk over the hand, but froze. Three of my paws were on her hand. I backed away. I sniffed around for a while, but the hand remained. I walked up to it again, and was rewarded to see a small pile of oats in the center. I grabbed one and stepped back, enjoying my prize. Then I took another, then another. The next time I stayed with my two paws on the hand while I ate. There was no reason not to, I thought, this person rescued me and is taking good care of me, so why shouldn’t I trust them? I ate several more oats before a second hand came down. It came down gently, allowing me to sniff it before moving behind me. I watched it out of the corner of my eye. It came to rest on my back. I flinched, and the hand moved away. A few oats later, it came back. This time, I barely started when it came to rest on my back. It stroked me gently, smoothing down my fur. I turned around, and sniffed it. I took a tiny nibble, not even puncturing the skin. The hand moved suddenly. I practically flew into my hide, peering around the corner as my owner sprinkled food and went away to refill my water. By the time she was back, I was spinning happily on my wheel. The owner watched as I had a sand bath, foraged around a bit, and came to the glass. She lifted the box, and settled it in my cage. I climbed in. I knew by now that the box meant the smooth cage that she sat in with me. And sure enough, we climbed the steps, and she let me go into the smooth cage, then climbed in with me. I played around for a while, pouching the seeds I found, and climbing around and on bridges and through tunnels. I had pretty much forgotten the owner was there. So I treated her like a bridge. I climbed up onto her leg, then, using her arm as a ramp, I heaved myself onto her shoulder. She had all this fur at the top of her head, which I hadn’t noticed before, and various other things that you’d never see in a hamster. (Except the poor hamster in a story mom used to tell me, who’s owner shaved him, all except for a spot at the top of his head. The hamster was long-haired, so the owner braided that hair and turned it into a ponytail...) I needn't really tell you any more details for the rest of the time in the smooth cage, long story short, I was returned to my cage with a lot more seeds and the knowledge that owners had weird features.
