I've had a lot of problems with my syrian hamster, Artemis. I love her to death, but she just won't be nice to me and be happy with the space she has.

So. time to give her the absolute largest cage I possibly can.

That being 5100 square inches.

I'm going to show you guys the entire process of building this cage, cost (where I am, at least) setting it up, and the end result!

I'll be able to begin buying materials and building in two or three weeks, and it should (hopefully) be finished about a month from now.

The inside dimensions will be 34"x150" (technically 34"x95" + 34"x55") which comes out to a very pleasing monster size of 5100 square inches!

The back and base will be made from aspen plywood, and the sides will be glass. One of my parents requirements was that it was on stilts, so I'll also be building those. The top will be several mesh lids with the stand thingy so I can be lazy and not need to hold them open.

I got a job a few months ago, and seeing as I am a minor with literally nothing else to spend that money on, yay hamster! It's going to be really expensive but anything for my queen ;D

It will be 100% made by me (someone with literally zero DIY skills - a bin cage was difficult for me) so I'll tell you guys what works well and what does not work well!

Thanks for reading!!! I can't wait to share the journey and ESPECIALLY the end result with you guys ;D

Question: would you be interested in seeing how I make the other DIYs for the cage in separate threads, or just showing them here? Also, any tips on building things? I have no clue what I'm doing.

Wow! Update us!

but also: consider that it will be very very hard to fill up, it may end up being very empty which may not be better than a 2000 sq inch or so enclosure that's very crowded.

I honestly can’t wait to see the final result, it will be absolutely amazing! ;D

Adding on to Boba’s point, the cost of bedding to fill the enclosure may be quite high. I know of people spending a good couple of hundred dollars filling 2000+ square inch enclosures outside of Europe, where safe, cheaper options are less readily available. However, if you are comfortable paying this, Artemis is one lucky hamster!

Have you seen Plueschraupe on Instagram and YouTube’s set ups? *I believe* 2 of her enclosures (Nea and Blubb’s) have around 5000sq inches of floorspace?? Could be helpful to get an idea of how much it will take to fill it? :)

I wish you all the best luck, and truly hope it goes swimmingly for you!! <3

That will be amazing for your hamster, I'm sure she'll appreciate it!

Also, I think I saw Gatsby's cage in Hail's Hamster's video, right? It was awesome!!

good point!!! I have looked into it and Ive found the cheapest things I can, and I'll be making a lot of stuff myself ;D I think it should be decently crowded to start, and Ill continue adding things if I don't have as much as I'd like. Expensive but ah well... I got so many more shifts than expected so I can likely afford it anyways. Great point though!!!

I have, her cages are so incredible and definitely my main inspiration!! Bedding is going to be insane, especially where I am, but if my math is right I should be able to afford it ahaha... thank you so much!! ;D
