Hey guys!

I'm doing my math homework right now, and I've come across four very hard problems. Right now in math class, we just finished our radicals unit, and we're transitioning into something else. My teacher decided to pop an exponents review on us for homework, and I kinda forgot how to do these equations.

Don't get me wrong, I looveeeeeeeeee exponents. Just somehow, in the last month, I've forgotten how to do them properly. Right now, I'm struggling the most on this one problem. We're using the "FOIL" method to solve it.

If any of you know how to do this, please leave a comment down below explaining step-by-step on how to complete this problem. It will be really helpful, thanks!

So if you are using the foil method, first multiply the two first numbers of each set

(-1 + x^2)(-1 + x^2)

-1*-1 is going to equal 1

Next, you'll want to do the outer edges:
(-1 + x^2)(-1 + x^2)
(-1)( x^2) = -x^2

Then the inner numbers:
(-1 + x^2) (-1 + x^2)
(X^2) (-1) = -x^2

Now finally the last numbers:
(-1 + x^2) (-1 + x^2)
(X^2) (x^2) = x^4

Now add them together into an equation:

1 + (-x^2 )+ (-x^2) + x^4
Also written as:
1 - x^2 + x^2 + 4x

Now you simplify by adding the like terms. And the only like terms here are -x^2 and -x^2

And once you add those you get a fully simplified equation:

1 - 2x^2 + x^4

If this makes no sense, sorry I'm not a math teacher haha I'm not sure how to best explain things

-1*-1 is going to equal 1

Next, you'll want to do the outer edges:
(-1+x^2)(-1+x^2)
(-1)(x^2)=-x^2

Then the inner numbers:
(-1+x^2)(-1+x^2)
(X^2)(-1)=-x^2

Now finally the last numbers:
(-1+x^2)(-1+x^2)
(X^2)(x^2)=x^4

Now add them together into an equation:

1+(-x^2)+(-x^2)+x^4
Also written as:
1-x^2+x^2+4x

Now you simply by adding the like terms. And the only like terms here are -x^2 and -x^2

And once you add those you get a fully simplified equation:

1-2x^2+x^4)

Yes, this is exactly it.

First- multiply the first numbers of each set.

Outside- multply the outside numbers of the sets.

Inside- multiply the inside numbers of each set

Last- multiply the last numbers of each set.

I just did this in math a few weeks ago, lol. Tater's 100% right, btw

yep, tater is right

i dont think you need the one side of a bracket though on the answer...?

it should come out to 1-2x^2+x^4, that's what i got

i never even knew this method was called foil, haha

I mistyped lol

I noticed it last night, but I was too lazy to go back and fix it

Thanks everyone, this helped a lot! I think I understand it better now.

Okay, this is another one of the problems I'm struggling with. Please help, if you can!

So that is the same as saying:

(1 - 3x^2) (1 - 3x^2)

So do the same thing you did for the other problem, except with just different numbers :3

Do the First:

1 * 1

Outer:

1 * -3x^2

Inner:

-3x^2 * 1

Last:

-3x^2 * -3x^2

*=multiplying btw

So try that :3

Just do exactly what I did for the first problem you showed, but with these numbers.

If you still don't get it I can try to help more, but I don't want to directly give them answer bc yeah lol

I understand how to do the FOIL process :3
Right now I have 1 -3x^2 -3x^2 +9x^2
Then I know that you combine -3x^2 -3x^2 together, but I'm not really sure what to do about the exponents. Negative three minus negative three is negative six. Now I'm just confused what to do with the x and exponents. x^2 - x^2 is what I'm so confused on. Would the product be -6x^4??
So then would it be 1 -6x^4 +9x^2?
Then in stand form, -6x^4 +9x^2 +1??

Your response confused me 0-0

Um
So if you have this:
1 -3x^2 -3x^2 +9x^2

Then it's wrong oop
I'd you multiply two numbers with exponents, you add them together. So -3x^2*-3x^2 will equal 9x^4

Then like you said you add the two middle numbers together which equals -6x^2
And bc it's just adding you keep the exponent how it is

And so your answer would be:
1-6x^2+9x^4

Okay, thanks Tater! I completely forgot the rules of adding and multiplying exponents, so I was completely doing that part wrong. Once I found that part, I was able to get all the other problems done. I should be good to go now!

Thanks everyone!!
