I’ve read so little books that I’ll just name 2:

A series of unfortunate events (IT’S A CHILDREN’S BOOK AND THERE’S REPETITIVE MURDER AND ARSON (sorry for caps lock) )

Warrior cats-

I really don’t know what to write other than those ones-

I loved the TV show for series of unfortunate events! I had a crush on Quickly!

So uh…. I’ve really struggled with reading recently. I used to enjoy it but now I find every book so boring now, nothing really engages me. I find it really hard to even get past the first chapter.

Any books you’d recommend for getting back into reading? I really like sad stuff, action, fast paced books (action on each page), and books with a fantastic beginning so I don’t give up on them too soon.

(I think due to my marvel addiction I forgot how to read a book ;-;)

I really enjoyed Willow Falls by Wendy Mass when I began reading. It's simple text and is really engaging if you like teen, drama, romance, more drama, magic, did I already say drama?

I totally get what you mean. I only just got back into reading after not doing it much for...years? I don't even know at this point. I read what I had to for school and called it quits.

I'm reading LOTR, and I just got the Percy Jackson series, so I'm gonna read that sometime. I read To Kill a Mockingbird, but it's definitely not fast-paced.

You know what actually got me back into reading? Fanfiction. I read fanfiction for tv shows I liked. Lots of angst and very fast-paced, so if you're looking for something like that...this is weird, but you could try a fanfic for a movie/series/book you like?  :)))

Oh boy, I have many opinions on books haha.

Some childhood/teen favs:

Percy Jackson / Heroes of Olympus - This is one of the most dearly loved children's fantasy series for a reason. It's jam packed with Greek / Roman mythology, action, and characters you fall head over heels for. If you haven't joined the fandom, do it now. You won't regret it. I first read Percy Jackson like eight years ago and continue to love it with my entire being. There are SO many books, a rad musical, a TV show coming out in the near future that looks like it's gonna be epic, and two movies we shall not speak of.

CHERUB series - a MASSIVELY underrated kid's spy series. Think Alex Rider, but actually believable. CHERUB is a branch of MI6 that trains up orphans as undercover agents, and they go on missions around the world, from breaking out of high-security arizona prisons, to infiltrating cults and taking down drug empires. You'll read it and want to become an agent yourself ;D

The Gone Series - All of a sudden, everyone over 14 vanishes and the kids are left to survive on their own. A modern Lord of the Flies, feat mutant superpowers. This series contains a lot of violence and gore that really excited my 14 year old self, but might not be for everyone. Something I can look back on and really appreciate is the diversity in the series - there were loads of characters of colour, lgbtq+ characters, characters struggling with mental illness / eating disorders, and they all felt real and developed.

The Mysterious Benedict Society - A group of four children from very different backgrounds are selected to go on an undercover mission that will save the world. I can't say much more without spoiling it. But this book had the most immaculate vibes. Really quirky and fantastical. Also filled with riddles and logic puzzles, which are super fun to solve as you go along! (This has recently been made into a Disney+ show if you prefer to watch things over reading them.)

Ready Player One - A thrilling quest set in a virtual reality, with major 80s vibes. I read this book years ago and still have book hangover to this day. Never read anything else quite like it.

Holes - Stanley Yelnats IV is wrongly accused of theft and sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional facility where the prisoners are mysteriously made to spend all day, every day, digging holes in the desert. Secrets are unearthed and mysteries unraveled. This book was hilarious and had so much heart.

Wonder - A coming of age story of Auggie, a boy with a facial difference who goes to public school for the first time. This book made me laugh and cry, and gave me many fuzzy feelings, it was like a warm hug.

Some LGBTQ+ recs for the gays:

Radio Silence - The main character, Frances, is obsessed with a podcast, and ends up meeting and forming a friendship with the creator, Aled. The plot sounds kinda meh but I promise, the vibes are immaculate in every way. It touches on mental illness, the pressures of school, academic expectations and going to university. This book basically called me out in every way possible. It centres around a platonic boy-girl relationship (something I never see enough of!!) and the majority of the cast are queer and poc <3

The House in the Cerulean Sea - Linus Baker is a case worker sent to inspect a top-secret orphanage that houses six magical children, believed to be 'extremely dangerous'. These children are (copied directly from the blurb) "a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist". While Linus is there, he slowly learns to overcome his prejudices and definitely does not fall in adorable gay love with the childrens' adoptive father Arthur Parnassus.

Six of Crows - This duology is massively hyped, and for good reason. Six teenage criminals are sent on an impossible heist to break this dude out of the highest security prison in their fantasy universe. And why do they risk their lives to take on this mission? Because they want the coin. Dark, gritty and absolutely enthralling. In summary: "be gay, do crime". Please read this, it's amazing. (I have written fanfiction for this my dudes, which says everything you need to know about how much this hooks you in...)

Red, White and Royal Blue - Probably the upper end of YA (so please check content warnings before reading!). Basically a rivals to fake friends to friends with benefits to lovers arc between Alex, the first son of the US president, and Prince Henry of the British Royal Family. Brilliantly written and laugh-out-loud hilarious. A wild ride from start to finish. My favourite romance book, hands down.

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - This is the sequel to The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, which is also an excellent and very gay book. But I'm partial to this one because of the ace rep and the incredible cast of female leads <3 Felicity Montague has run away from her rich family home to try and become a doctor. But it's the 18th century, women aren't allowed to train in medicine, and she's rejected from every medical school she tries. So she ends up resorting to more drastic measures... Feat. an aroace main character, a lesbian muslim pirate, an animal-loving best friend who shows that you can be feminine and strong, and sea dragons.

Honourable mention: The Heartstopper graphic novel series. (The tv show adaptation recently came out on netflix and I am still not over it.) If you want fluffy, adorable, wholesome highschool romance, and queer people being happy, this is for you.

Ok I'm done now thanks for bearing with my rambling. If you've read any of these, let's be friends :)

If you're in a reading slump and are a fan of action, I'd recommend Cherub (description above). It's by a british author so shouldn't be hard to get hold of in the UK. Genuinely some of the most fast paced writing I've ever read ;D

But I also agree with Hippo. Reading + Marvel = Marvel fanfic, go check out Ao3 my friend ;)

I personally love the casting of Annabeth and think it's a shame people are judging the actress before even giving her a chance.

As for the whole "racist" argument, I think Uncle Rick explains everything really well in his blog post: https://rickriordan.com/2022/05/leah-jeffries-is-annabeth-chase/

Yeah, it's a shame that the actors don't look exactly like they were described in the books and I can see why you're disappointed. But I think appearances are trivial compared to their ability to embody the character's personalities. Having a Black Annabeth is going to be so inspiring to so many young Black girls out there and that, in my opinion, can ony be a positive thing :)

Recasting someones race from Greek to something else seems very racist to me. It would be like a European person taking over the role of Black Panther. It changes everything about the person's background and where they came from. Not cool.

I agree and was not trying to offend anyone. It is just the fact that Annabeth in the book was always my favorite. And it always said exactly how everyone looked. How could they change that? Again, not trying to be mean... It just that my comfort characters are being changed so much. Sorry If I upset you
