Hello everyone

We are compiling some info about vet prices and need your help. If you have ever taken your hamster to the vet, would you mind sharing how much it cost and what you paid for?

You can post here or PM me if you'd prefer to keep it more private.

What we're looking for:
-Procedures and their prices
-Medications and their prices (example: ibuprofen 25mg, 30 pills)
-General location (down to metro area if possible, for comparison)
-Type of vet - exotic? Specialist? General cat/dog vet?
-Other costs (lab fees, exam fees, etc)

Thanks a ton!

Oakham Veterinary Hospital

Location: Rural, Midlands UK

They don't state they are small animal specialists, but the vet I saw was very knowledgeable about hamsters.

Visit 1: Mitch - suspected stroke (4 years ago). Euthanasia £15. No consultation fee.

Visit 2: Frankie - check up after he escaped and was missing for 9 days (2 years ago). Consultation fee £15. No other charges. Vet gave him a rehydration formula during the exam.

Visit 3: Frankie - growth on chest (suspected tumour - June this year). Biopsy fee: £50 (standard charge). Result came back positive, no other charges (no consultation fee).

I have taken a robo to a vet.  Wasn't the best experience to be blunt but here is what happened.

I'm pretty sure he was an exotics vet.  First he weighed Nugget, took some of the dry skin that was behind his ear and checked it under a microscope looking for bacteria.  That really was about it.  The proceder was 45$ and the small bottle of sulfer stuff he prescribed was about 30$  It came in a small bottle (smelled awful)  and I was to put it on him twice a day.  that was it.

EDIT: as for location is it ok if I don't say? It was relatively close to my house.

Lol yeah sulfur does STINK. You don't have to say the location, but can you tell me if it was a city, or more rural area, info like that? Obviously vets in different areas will have different prices so we want a way to compare.

Can I get a little more info? :shy: When you say "visit" and "checkup", the checkup would be a second, follow-up appointment correct? (just clarifying :goodvibes:)

I should have cleared up in my first post, do you remember how much you were given of each of the medicines? Like, a 0.5 mL tube of Baytril is going to be less expensive than a 2.0 mL tube.

Yes on the first part. For the second, let me check once I get home as I still have all the medication. :)

Hello. :)

Before Bear I had to take my hamster to the vet every week and feed him medicine 2 times a day.

It was quite expensive, and never worked. :

The medicine was oral, so now that I think of it I can understand why it didn't work...

SNOWFLAKE'S WEEKLY HEALTH

They gave him shots and did skin scrapes for mites almost every week.

I am in the area of Moo (Wisconsin) :veryhappy:
I went to a general vet, there aren't much specialists or exotic vets in my area sadly.

We had him out to sleep and that also costed some money, unknown to me since it was 3 years ago. He did exam after exam, it started adding up FAST.

Overview:

Mites is very expensive and time consuming, and it is very sad.

Sorry If I couldn't help much,  it was 3 years ago so much of it wasn't even told to me. :

Thanks for your effort Ww123, and I'm sorry about Snowflake. However I'm trying to get exact costs that people have experienced. If we get enough information, members of the forum can get a better idea of what kind of costs they can actually expect at a vet, rather than a generic "it's expensive" or "Oh it's really not that bad." Obviously we can't actually estimate costs of future vet visits, but hopefully this will help those who think a vet visit would be impossibly expensive or "not worth it."

That's a great idea! :)

Hopefully people would look at it all the time so that they can save up money for possible in case of illness happening. :veryhappy:

Okay, got it all. I also have a quote for euthanasia/cremation - $85 again. See a trend? X_X;

Baytril - 20mg/mL x 7.5 mL (Baytril 50mg Tabs at bottom).

Metacam - 1.5mg/mL x 10mL

Flamazine - 1% cream 20gm

They are an exotics vet clinic, with all female staff. They have pictures of their exotics there, and even some pictures with hams under anesthetic. This is the only exotic vet in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

All over exam: $60

Nail/teeth trimming: $70, $60 for first exam, $10 every other time after that

Baytril (forget the dosage): $40

I think these results could be interesting. On my dog breed board- where all the dogs are the same breed/about the same size, I've noticed a HUGE range in prices. Procedures that cost me under $200, run people in other parts of the country close to $1,000. I've also noticed they can vary a lot even within my town, and by provider etc. When my dog needed specialty care, we figured out that going to the big vet school was going to be a LOT cheaper than having the tests done there at my vet's- which was the opposite of what I expected (and not always the case). And if I buy my dog's meds at the people pharmacy, it's a LOT cheaper than at the vet. etc etc.

I've never had to bring a hamster to the vet though, so I can't contribute to that. I just think these results will be interesting to observe.
